Begin your Law Enforcement career today by becoming a Jailer for the Clay County Sheriff’s Office! We are a 24/7 facility that houses up to 20 inmates. Our Jailers are the principal guardian of the county jail. All jobs involve working with inmates or families of inmates.
Part-time positions available. The starting wage is $22.35/hour plus a shift differential for night and weekend hours.
Key Responsibilities
As a Jailer, you will:
- In-process arrestees and out-process inmates for release using proper procedures.
- Account for inmate money and property; manage property releases.
- Administer prescribed medications and monitor inmate well-being.
- Serve meals and ensure compliance with vendor specifications.
- Maintain jail security to prevent escapes and ensure safety.
- Manage jail operations including public relations, communication, and file maintenance.
- Supervise work release inmates and prevent contraband entry.
- Assist the public with fingerprinting for background checks.
- Oversee visitation while maintaining security.
- Maintain facility cleanliness and handle laundry as needed.
- Conduct visual surveillance of facility interior and exterior.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; post-secondary education in a related field preferred.
- Previous experience preferred.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Successful completion of criminal and employment background checks.
- Maintain a high level of physical fitness.
- Ability to work varied shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Ability to learn and follow criminal and traffic laws, codes, and procedures.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to develop and maintain positive professional relationships.
- Demonstrated organizational skills.
