Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) | Orange County
Alter Behavioral Health is an adult mental health treatment provider with a network of upscale inpatient residential facilities in Orange County and San Diego.
- Schedule: Friday through Monday, 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM remote on-call (5:00 PM – 10:00 PM)
- Friday/Monday : In-Person
- Saturday/Sunday: Remote
- Competitive Compensation: $150,000 - $170,000/year (DOE)
- Location: You will support all Orange County residential facilities located in Dana Point, San Juan Capistrano, Capistrano Beach, and Irvine.

At Alter Behavioral Health, every interaction matters. As a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), you play a vital role in delivering high-quality psychiatric care, supporting client stability, and guiding treatment outcomes across the continuum of care.
This role goes beyond medication management — it’s about clinical leadership, collaboration, and delivering compassionate, evidence-based care in a residential setting.
What You’ll Do
Psychiatric Evaluation & Treatment
- Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and assessments
- Diagnose mental health conditions and develop individualized treatment plans
- Prescribe and manage medications, including medication-assisted treatment (MAT)
Client Care & Intake Oversight
- Complete new client intakes within 24 hours of admission
- Monitor client progress and adjust treatment plans as needed
- Ensure continuity of care throughout the treatment process
Collaboration & Care Coordination
- Partner with psychiatrists, therapists, nurses, and residential staff
- Participate in multidisciplinary treatment team meetings
- Communicate effectively with families, providers, and external partners
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation in EMR systems
- Ensure compliance with DHCS, DSS, Joint Commission, HIPAA, and applicable regulations
On-Call Clinical Support
- Provide remote support for clinical emergencies between 5:00 PM – 10:00 PM
- Respond to urgent medication requests and clinical concerns as needed

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in residential treatment or higher levels of care
- Experience treating co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders
- Familiarity with EMR systems
- Experience working within multidisciplinary teams
Minimum Qualifications
- Current, unrestricted Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) license in California
Active DEA certification - Strong knowledge of adult psychiatric disorders and psychopharmacology
- Familiarity with ASAM criteria and behavioral health best practices
Requirements
- Valid California Driver’s License required
- CPR & First Aid certification required (or ability to obtain prior to start)
- Must pass Live Scan fingerprint clearance
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States
Physical Requirements
- Frequent standing, walking, and movement between facilities
- Ability to navigate multi-level residential homes, including stairs
- Ability to respond to urgent clinical situations as needed
- Ability to operate computers and documentation systems
Compliance
Employment is contingent upon:
- Successful Live Scan clearance
- Completion of required health screenings, drug testing, and TB testing
- Compliance with DHCS, DSS, Joint Commission standards, HIPAA, and applicable California employment laws
