Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Health Administration, Nursing, Social Work, or a related field AND two (2) years of experience in staff education and development or a related area.
  • Must obtain Certified Correctional Health Professional certification within one (1) year of hire if not already certified at the time of hire. Certification must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Experience working in a correctional setting and/or graduation from an accredited nursing or behavioral health program with current Pennsylvania practicing licensure is preferred (e.g., RN, LPC, LSW, etc.).
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

It is the policy of Allegheny County that in order to receive a final offer of employment, candidates must successfully pass a background check, which includes verification of Allegheny County Real Estate Tax status, and drug/medical examinations as required for the position. The pre-employment drug screen must be completed within 48 hours of the acceptance of the conditional offer of employment.

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Deputy of Health Services Administration – Education and Services, the Staff Educator is responsible for planning, organizing, developing, and directing in-service educational programs in accordance with Crisis Response and Intervention Training (CRIT) guidelines. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring that all educational programs comply with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations that govern the facility.

Overview

Duties:

  • Conducts need analysis studies to determine training needs within the organization.
  • Confers with management to gain specific information on work situations to design training programs for employees to better understand changes in policies, procedures, regulations, and technologies.
  • Formulates teaching outlines and determines instructional methods such as individual training, group instruction, lectures, demonstrations, conferences, meetings, and workshops.
  • Selects or develops teaching aids such as handbooks, demonstration models, multi-media visual aids, computer tutorial aids, and reference works, as well as test, evaluation, or survey procedures to be used at pre- and post-completion of training.
  • Conducts and coordinates training sessions covering specified areas such as new employee orientation, on-the-job training, and suicide prevention, as well as mandatory training required to fulfill accrediting agencies, state, and federal minimum annual training requirements.
  • Provides CPR/First Aid training as a certified instructor to healthcare and correctional staff as needed.
  • Measures progress and evaluates the effectiveness of training sessions.
  • Secures, develops, and maintains records, reports, instructional manuals, reference materials, and other materials pertinent to in-service and mandatory educational programs.
  • Revises the design of training curriculum and methods to improve training effectiveness, as needed.
  • Collaborates with all facility staff educators to facilitate and schedule training opportunities.
  • Performs on-call expectations as the Healthcare Duty Officer.
  • Performs related duties as assigned or directed.

  • Seek new instruction and teaching methods and principles to incorporate into existing practices.
  • Develop training curriculum and objectives; prepare and present material in group settings, using a variety of media.
  • Operate a personal computer.
  • Communicate effectively with incarcerated individuals and colleagues.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with managers, supervisors, and employees.
  • Function independently, be flexible, and work effectively with correctional staff.
  • Work varied days/shifts based on facility educational training needs.
  • Function on-call 24/7 for a week at a time as a Healthcare Duty Officer.

Residency: Not required to live in Allegheny County
