School Transportation Driver

POSITION: School Transportation Driver – 0.125 FTE (1 hour/day)

LOCATION: Special Education YEAR: 2023 - 2024 school year

RANGE: $21.99-$28.06/hour

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Under the direction of the Special Education Director, transports students to/from school and school-related activities while maintaining a safe environment. To transport students to and from school, and other sites within designated route(s) and to ensure the safety of the student passengers while in a vehicle. Employees in this classification receive general supervision within a framework of standard policies and procedures. This job class is responsible for the safe operation of a 9 passenger or less non-school bus vehicle and for ensuring the safety of student passenger while meeting established transportation schedules.

1. Operate school vans over designated routes to transport students to/from school and school-related activities E

2. Maintain discipline and safety on the van E

3. Assist students on and off the van as necessary E

4. Report emergencies by radio and administer first aid as needed E

5. Prepare and distribute reports related to van operation and student behavior E

6. Maintain vehicle operation records such as number of passengers carried, miles traveled and fuel used E

7. Attend regularly scheduled mandated in-service meetings E

8. Communicate with school staff and parents, regarding student behavior as needed E

9. Perform related duties as required E

KNOWLEDGE OF: Safe driving practices and techniques; effective oral and written communication skills; as well as pupil management techniques and skills; Knowledge of the provisions of the California Motor Vehicle code and the Education Code as applied to the operation of vehicles used in the transport of students

ABILITY TO: Remain calm: drive safely under pressure of time constraints, student misbehavior, hazardous road conditions, and traffic demands. Punctuality and ability to pace activity to meet prescribed schedules; Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationship with those contacted in the performance of required duties

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED: 9 passenger vehicle which may have wheel chair lift

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, mobility to stand stoop, reach, and bend; mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small objects; perform work which involves the frequent lifting, pushing and/or pulling of objects which may approximate 50 to 100 pounds; mobility to walk long distances; may be required to work around foul odors, noise, moving mechanical parts, and electrical current; subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

• Must have a valid California driver’s license, Class C
• Current First Aid and CPR certificates
• DMV driving record with fewer than 2 points

Anycombination equivalent to training and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying, i.e. Graduation from high school and one year experience in the operation of a school van or other large motor vehicle.
