Position OverviewThe Mental Health Counselor at ASHS plays a vital role in supporting the emotional, psychological, and developmental well-being of students in a rigorous, residential healthcare-focused environment. This individual will provide direct counseling services, collaborate with staff and families, and contribute to a trauma-informed, inclusive school culture that reflects ASHS’s core values: Compassion, Innovation, Integrity, and Service.
The ideal candidate is empathetic, culturally responsive, and passionate about adolescent mental health and wellness.
Key Responsibilities Counseling & Student Support- Provide individual and group counseling to students experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, or other challenges.
- Facilitate small group sessions focused on emotional regulation, social skills, academic stress, and peer relationships.
- Support students in developing executive functioning skills such as organization, time management, and goal setting.
- Participate in the Student Support Team to identify students needing targeted or intensive interventions.
- Work closely with the Lead Counselor, Dean of Students, Campus Director, and Dean of Curriculum & Instruction Department to ensure holistic student support.
- Maintain proactive communication with families, educators, and external providers to coordinate care.
- Consult with staff regarding student needs, accommodations, and behavioral strategies.
- Assist students and families in understanding school policies and navigating transitions.
- Contribute to the design and implementation of a comprehensive mental health and wellness program.
- Advocate for student well-being and equity in school-wide decision-making.
- Maintain accurate records and monitor student progress to evaluate program effectiveness.
- Attend and support student activities and events to foster connection and visibility.
- Master’s degree in counseling, social work, psychology, or related field.
- Licensed or license-eligible in Alabama (LPC, LCSW, LMFT, etc.).
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
- Commitment to trauma-informed care, cultural responsiveness, and ethical practice.
- Professional experience in the mental health field, preferably as a licensed social working supporting adolescents in school, clinical, or community settings.
- Familiarity with trauma-informed practices and culturally responsive care.
- Background in healthcare education or interest in health equity and youth empowerment.
Job performance will be evaluated by the immediate supervisor based on the school’s policy and procedures.
Compensation & Benefits- Salary Range: $55,000 - $85,000 annually, based on experience and qualifications.
