NH-02 2026 Salary Range: $40,736-$97,087 Yearly

NH-03 2026 Salary Range: $89,508-$138,370 Yearly

In this position you will serve as a developmental Mechanical Engineer under the direct guidance of a Senior Engineer, performing engineering duties in support of assigned program(s) or engineering functional. This position is intended to develop individuals who can deal effectively with change and complexity within the Air Force environment as it relates to their career field; to perform the full range of engineering work, to apply the training and/or education received and complete developmental assignments and training outlined in the formal training & development plan. The full performance (target) level of this position is NH-3; Incumbent must meet all regulatory training requirements prior to promotion to the target grade. The incumbent will receive formal, informal, and/or on-the-job training in the specialty area, and assignments will become progressively more difficult in nature. Assignments at this level are designed to provide the knowledges, skills, and abilities required to successfully perform the duties at the full performance level. Non-competitive promotion to the next grade level is dependent upon: 1) satisfactory completion of the training requirements, 2) demonstrated ability to perform the duties at the next higher level, 3) fulfillment of all required legal and regulatory requirements for promotion, and 4) recommendation for promotion by the supervisor.

• Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP): Type: 4 - Non-Critical Acquisition Position, Category: N - Engineering & Technical Management, Level: 2 - Practitioner. This position has been designated as an Non-Critical Acquisition Position and is covered by the Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP). The selectee must meet, or be capable of achieving the APDP certification as designated on the position description within the defined grace period for that certification level after assignment. This position also requires the employee to engage in acquisition continuous learning activities achieving 80 Continuous Learning points every 24 months.
• The work may require the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver’s license may be required for the position.
  
  

Recruitment Knowledge Skills And Abilities

• Professional knowledge of mechanical engineering concepts, principles, and practices and familiarity with architectural and other engineering disciplines.
• Knowledge of a broad range of engineering and construction standards, methods, practices, and techniques, materials, and equipment to determine compliance with federal, state, and local codes and regulations; of standard contracting regulations, practices, and procedures as it relates to facilities engineering; knowledge of health, safety, and environmental requirements; of environmental principles, laws, and regulations; of work classifications and the regulatory and statutory restrictions on the expenditures of appropriated and non-appropriated funds.
• Knowledge of automated data processing concepts, systems capabilities; and knowledge of program planning and budgeting cycles, financial control and budget systems and management.
• Knowledge of aesthetic and functional design techniques and skill in preparing project documentation, to include preliminary drawings, sketches, and construction drawings sufficient to convey design concepts and ideas and formulate working drawings.
• Ability to plan, conduct and record site/facilities surveys and inspection; to document, analyze, interpret, and apply results, and procedures in a variety of situations and recommend timely and economical solutions.
• Ability to plan and organize work and coordinate with other engineering disciplines and architects; and communicate effectively both orally and in writing and maintain good working relationships.
