Position Summary
- The PMHNP will provide evidence-based psychiatric care to patients across the lifespan (adjust to your target population: adults, adolescents, or both). This role includes psychiatric evaluations, diagnosis, medication management (including controlled substances as permitted by Texas law), psychotherapy, crisis intervention, and care coordination with primary care providers and behavioral health teammates. The PMHNP will collaborate with a supervising physician as required by Texas scope-of-practice guidelines and clinic policy.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and develop individualized treatment plans.
- Diagnose mental health conditions and monitor treatment response; adjust medications and therapies accordingly.
- Provide medication management, including prescribing psychotropic medications, monitoring for efficacy and adverse effects, and coordinating laboratory monitoring as needed.
- Deliver psychotherapy (evidence-based approaches) or coordinate with licensed therapists for therapy as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
- Order and interpret appropriate diagnostic tests and labs; utilize results to inform treatment.
- Collaborate with primary care physicians, psychologists/therapists, social workers, case managers, and other care team members to ensure integrated patient care.
- Perform risk assessments (suicidality, homicidality, safety planning) and provide crisis intervention when needed.
- Document all patient encounters accurately in the Electronic Health Record (EHR); ensure compliance with HIPAA and Texas state regulations.
- Educate patients and families about diagnoses, treatment options, side effects, and wellness strategies; provide culturally sensitive and patient-centered care.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, care pathways, and clinic-based performance metrics.
- Participate in on-call or urgent-care rotation as required by the clinic.
- May participate in telepsychiatry sessions or outreach programs as part of service expansion.
Qualifications
- Education: Master’s or Doctoral degree in Nursing (MSN or DNP) with PMHNP specialization.
- Certification: PMHNP-BC or equivalent (e.g., ANCC Certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner).
- Licensure: Current, unrestricted APRN license to practice in Texas with prescriptive authority. DEA registration for prescribing controlled substances.
- Experience: Minimum 2 years of relevant PMHNP experience in outpatient or integrated care settings preferred; experience with both adult and pediatric populations may be required depending on role.
- Licensure/Certification Requirements: BLS (and ACLS if required by the clinic or patient population).
- Skills: Excellent clinical judgment, communication, and interpersonal skills; ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team; strong documentation and electronic medical record (EMR) proficiency; culturally competent care; ability to work with diverse populations; bilingual (Spanish) is a plus.
- Compliance: Demonstrated knowledge of state and federal healthcare regulations, patient privacy, and safe prescribing practices.
