Position Details

General Statement

Montana State University seeks qualified individuals to provide non-tenurable level instruction and/or related functions. Instructors are needed to teach classes depending upon need and available funding.

Applications are accepted on a continual basis (unless otherwise indicated) and will be maintained in pool for two years. After two years, candidates will be notified to re-submit materials for continued consideration.

The department or program search committees or hiring authority will review and evaluate the submitted application materials. Applicants will be notified if their application is being retained in the non-tenure track faculty hiring pool.

Appointments are on a part-time basis and vary in duration, a couple weeks, a semester or an academic year, depending on the specific needs of the department/program. Salary is dependent on number of courses taught and duration.

Responsibilities may include: 1) Teaching on-campus or online courses, 2) Advising, evaluating and assisting students and/or 3) Curriculum and/or course development.

We seek individuals who work professionally and effectively with a wide range of individuals, possess effective interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills and have the ability to contribute positively to the academic success of the students and the mission of Montana State University. Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teaching on-campus or online courses.
  • Advising, evaluating and assisting students.
  • Participating in weekly faculty meetings.
  • Meeting regularly with, collaborating with, and evaluating peer leader, if one is assigned to your section.

Required Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  1. B.S., M.S., and/or Ph.D. Degree in a relevant field.

  1. Prior teaching experience directly related to the position for which you are applying.
  2. Demonstrated experience teaching interdisciplinary courses.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of college student development.

  • Non-Tenure Track Faculty - Any position that is .5 FTE or more is represented by the Associated Faculty of Montana State University (AFMSU).     • Any position less than .5 FTE is not represented by the Union and is not required to pay dues.
    • If the FTE changes during employment, the representational status of this position could be impacted.

The Program

The Department

The Department of Plant Sciences and Plant Pathology is administered by the College of Agriculture and has about 30 faculty members. Faculty members are highly productive scholars with substantial research records in leading refereed journals, extramural grant funding, and high quality teaching and outreach programs. The department offers undergraduate degrees in Plant Science or Environmental Horticulture. Plant Science students can select degree options in Crop Science, Plant Biology, or Plant Biotechnology. Environmental Horticulture students can select from options in Environmental Horticultural Science or Landscape Design. Graduate students can choose advanced work for a Master of Science degree in either Plant Sciences or Plant Pathology, or a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Plant Sciences with options in either Plant Pathology or Plant Genetics. The department participates in the inter-departmental Entomology Program, offering a Master of Science in Entomology and undergraduate Minor

The College

As the foundational component of Montana's land grant university at Montana State University, the College of Agriculture (COA) and the Montana Agricultural Experiment Station (MAES) provide instruction in dynamic degree programs and conduct research relevant to the challenges in Montana's agricultural and natural resource communities. We create opportunities for students, staff and faculty to excel through hands-on learning, to serve through campus and community engagement, to explore unique solutions to distinct and interesting questions and to connect Montanans with the global community through research discoveries and outreach. The COA offers eleven baccalaureate, nine masters, and four doctoral degree programs from five departments and one division. MAES conducts research through the Department of Research Centers (Corvallis, Conrad, Creston, Havre, Huntley, Moccasin, Sidney), in collaboration with other academic departments, near Bozeman, and throughout Montana.
