Position Details

General Statement

Montana State University seeks qualified individuals to provide non-tenurable level instruction and/or related functions. Instructors are needed to teach classes depending upon need and available funding.

Applications are accepted on a continual basis (unless otherwise indicated) and will be maintained in pool for two years. After two years, candidates will be notified to re-submit materials for continued consideration.

The department or program search committees or hiring authority will review and evaluate the submitted application materials. Applicants will be notified if their application is being retained in the non-tenure track faculty hiring pool.

Appointments are on a part-time basis and vary in duration, a couple weeks, a semester or an academic year, depending on the specific needs of the department/program. Salary is dependent on number of courses taught and duration.

Duties and Responsibilities

We hope to attract applicants who can teach in a broad University community and have demonstrated ability in helping students from various backgrounds succeed.

Duties and responsibilities vary according to the needs of the school and specific area of instruction and may include:

  • Teaching on-campus or online courses.
  • Advising, evaluating and assisting students.
  • Curriculum and/or course development.
  • Participating in weekly faculty meetings.
  • Meeting regularly with, collaborating with, and evaluating peer leader, if one is assigned to your section.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Terminal academic degree or comparable professional experience.
  • Demonstrated skills appropriate to the specific course(s)

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Prior teaching experience.
  • A significant record of accomplishment related to the desired teaching area(s).
  • Demonstrated commitment to student, faculty, and staff enrichment

  • Be able to work closely with other faculty in a collegial environment and contribute to the academic mission of the school.

Position Special Requirements/Additional Information

The position for which you have applied MAY BE a Union position. Union affiliation is determined by job duties and the collective bargaining unit.

  • Non-Tenure Track Faculty – Any position that is .5 FTE or more is represented by the Associated Faculty of Montana State University (AFMSU). Faculty covered by AFMSU may choose to pay membership dues. This is a condition of employment. Additional information can be found at AFMSU or by emailing AFSMU .
    • Any position less than .5 FTE is not represented by the Union and is not required to pay dues.
    • If the FTE changes during employment, the representational status of this position could be impacted.
    • Exceptions: Anyone having successfully completed a PEI exam or any faculty working in Extension are exempt from the Union.

The Program The Department

At MSU, a top-tier research university, music plays a very special role in the lives of both our students and our faculty. Our music, music education, and music technology degrees offer great choices for music majors, and our fifteen performing ensembles and a wide array of courses provide opportunities for majors, minors and non-majors. MSU is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, and many engineering, science, business, humanities, education and fine arts majors find their musical home here.

The Bachelor of Arts in Music at Montana State University is designed to enable students to combine concentrated music studies with a wide variety of areas outside of music.

The Bachelor of Music Education (K-12 Broadfield) leads to certification to teach music at all levels of the public schools. A selection of courses in music education, music theory, and music history are offered at the graduate level. 100% of recent MSU music education graduates who sought jobs in music education are currently working in the field.

The Bachelor of Arts in Music Technology is a synthesis of traditional musical training and application through new technologies. Students develop skills in areas including music composition and theory, recording, sound synthesis, sound design for film and theater, audio for film/video and multimedia, film scoring, notation and sequencing, orchestration, interdisciplinary collaboration, music business, and instrumental/vocal performance.

The Master of Music in Music Education (MMME) is designed for currently licensed, practicing music teachers. This degree program can be completed 100% online, allowing students to earn an advanced music degree while continuing their teaching career. The MMME curriculum emphasizes practical applications of music and music education content in K-12 music classrooms.

The College

The College of Arts and Architecture is home to distinctive academic programs housed in the Schools of Art, Architecture, Music and Film & Photography. Students enjoy close mentoring relationships with faculty through a curriculum that is rich in studio- and lab-based pedagogy. The College offers international and cultural travel opportunities for students in all majors and encourages internship experiences for many of its programs. The College hosts the only accredited Architecture program in Montana and supports a unique, world-class graduate film program in science and natural history filmmaking. Graduates from the college enjoy successful careers in art, design, media production, photography, architecture, education and music as well as apply the discipline, creative problems solving skills and work ethic embedded in their programs to any career. The College is home to the internationally recognized Montana Shakespeare in the Parks theater company and supports the Black Box Theatre as well as innovation and design spaces such as the Design Sandbox for Engaged Learning and the Community Design Center.
