Purpose:
The Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for projects, ensuring profitability while aligning with customer expectations and Company capabilities. This role collaborates closely with Project Managers, engineers, and fabrication teams to analyze project scope, and develop pricing strategies. The Estimator plays a key role in driving business success by ensuring bids are precise, competitive, and aligned with operational capacity.
Responsibilities:
Estimating & Cost Analysis – Analyze project specifications, drawings, and REQs to determine scope and pricing requirements, calculates material, labor and equipment costs based on project requirements, utilizes historical data and industry benchmarks to develop competitive estimates, ensures all estimates are accurate, comprehensive, and submitted on time.
Collaboration & Leadership – Works closely with Project Managers, engineers, and fabrication teams to ensure estimates reflect actual production capabilities, when applicable, take a leadership role in coordinating estimating efforts with fabrication shop to ensure feasibility and efficiency, communication cost and timeline expectations to internal teams and customers.
Proposal Development – Prepares detailed bid proposals, ensuring clarity in scope, pricing, and terms, identifies potential risks, and recommends pricing adjustments or contingency plans, participates in bid reviews and negotiating with customers and internal stakeholders.
Process Improvement & Cost Control –Continuously refines estimating procedures to improve accuracy and efficiency, monitors actual job costs versus estimates and identifies areas for improvement, works with purchasing and suppliers to obtain competitive pricing on materials.
Market & Industry Awareness – Stays up to date on material costs, labor rates and market trends, develops, and maintains relationships with vendors, subcontractors, and key stakeholders, monitors competitor pricing and market conditions to refine estimating strategies.
Safety Compliance –Follows all Company and industry safety protocols for self and any team oversight.
Other – Other duties, roles and responsibilities as assigned.
Knowledge & Skills:
Strong understanding of estimating methodologies and cost analysis.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and project specifications.
Knowledge of materials, fabrication processes, and labor costs.
Proficiency in estimating software and Microsoft Excel.
Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
Effective communication and negotiation skills.
Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment with fluctuating priorities and deadlines with excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to sit for extended periods while working on estimates.
Occasional site visits may require standing, walking, and climbing, stooping, bending.
Ability to review materials, parts and fabrication processes in a shop or other environment.
Qualifications:
High School diploma or equivalent; degree in construction management, engineering, or related field preferred.
2 years of experience in estimating, preferably in fabrication, construction, or industrial services.
Experience with estimating software and project management tools.
Knowledge of fabrication shop operations and production workflows, familiarity with fabrication machinery and equipment.
Understanding of cost control, procurement, and scheduling principles.
