What are the responsibilities and job description for the Temporary Protein Expression Scientist position at Advanced Clinical?
We are currently seeking a highly skilled Protein Expression & Purification Scientist (Contractor) to join a well-known client’s Discovery and Structural Biology team. This role will support cutting-edge drug discovery programs through molecular biology, protein expression, and purification workflows in a dynamic research environment.
The Scientist will contribute to the development and optimization of protein production pipelines using baculovirus/insect cell and bacterial expression systems, supporting high-throughput screening and downstream characterization. This is an excellent opportunity to work with state-of-the-art technologies while collaborating with cross-functional teams to advance innovative therapeutics.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Molecular Biology & Cloning
• Perform molecular biology workflows including cloning, vector design, construct optimization, and sequence verification.
• Execute PCR, primer design, and cloning strategies (restriction-based and recombination-based methods).
Protein Expression
• Execute protein expression using:
o Baculovirus Expression Vector Systems (BEVS) in insect cells, including virus generation, amplification, and optimization.
o E. coli expression systems, including IPTG-induced and autoinduction methods.
• Conduct high-throughput (HTP) small-scale expression screening to evaluate constructs and conditions.
Protein Purification & Characterization
• Purify recombinant proteins using chromatographic techniques (affinity, ion exchange, size exclusion chromatography).
• Optimize expression and purification workflows to achieve required yield, purity, and quality.
• Perform analytical characterization including SDS-PAGE, Western blotting, SEC, and related assays.
Data & Documentation
• Maintain accurate laboratory records in accordance with internal documentation standards (Benchling experience a plus).
• Communicate experimental results, observations, and recommendations clearly to team members.
Compliance & Collaboration
• Adhere to laboratory safety policies and regulatory requirements.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support research programs and project goals.
EXPERIENCE
• Bachelor’s degree with 3 years, or Master’s degree with 1 year of relevant industry experience in biochemistry, molecular biology, structural biology, or related field.
• Strong expertise in molecular biology and cloning techniques.
• Demonstrated experience with protein expression in BEVS/insect systems and E. coli.
• Experience with high-throughput expression screening and optimization workflows.
• Proven experience with chromatographic purification methods and protein characterization.
Preferred:
• Experience with biophysical characterization techniques, such as LC MS, SPR, MST, SEC MALS, nanoDSF, or mass photometry.
EDUCATION
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Structural Biology, or a related scientific discipline required.
TO BE A BEST FIT, YOUR STRENGTHS MUST INCLUDE
• Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills across cloning, expression, and purification workflows.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within cross-functional teams.
• Excellent organizational and documentation skills with attention to detail.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet timelines in a fast-paced research environment.
• Commitment to quality, reproducibility, and continuous improvement.
