Position Summary
The Controller will oversee all accounting and financial reporting activities for a growing real estate and property management portfolio. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate property-level and consolidated financial reporting, strong internal controls, and compliance with GAAP and real estate–specific accounting requirements. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with multi-entity real estate accounting and works closely with asset management, property operations, and executive leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting & Financial Reporting
- Oversee full-cycle accounting for multiple legal entities, properties, and ownership structures
- Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements at the property and consolidated levels
- Ensure accurate tracking of revenues, expenses, CAM reconciliations, and owner distributions
- Manage accounting for acquisitions, dispositions, refinancings, and capital improvements
- Maintain compliance with GAAP and real estate–specific accounting standards
Budgeting, Forecasting & Analysis
- Support annual property and corporate budgeting processes
- Monitor operating performance against budgets and forecasts
- Provide variance analysis and financial insights to management and asset teams
Property Management & Operations Support
- Partner with property management teams on expense controls, lease administration, and recoveries
- Oversee rent rolls, AR aging, and revenue recognition
- Review and approve property manager financial reports
- Support lender reporting and covenant compliance
Tax, Audit & Compliance
- Coordinate with external auditors, tax advisors, and lenders
- Oversee preparation of property-level and entity tax filings (partnerships, LLCs, K-1s)
- Maintain internal controls and accounting policies
- Ensure compliance with loan agreements, investor reporting, and regulatory requirements
Leadership & Systems
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff
- Evaluate, implement, and improve accounting systems and processes
- Ensure effective use of property management and accounting software
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (Master’s a plus)
- CPA strongly preferred
- 7 years of accounting experience, with significant real estate and property management exposure
- Experience with multi-entity and multi-property accounting
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and real estate accounting practices
- Proficiency with common real estate accounting and property management systems (e.g., Yardi, AppFolio, MRI, RealPage, or similar)
- Advanced Excel skills and strong analytical ability
- Proven leadership and communication skills
Preferred Experience
- Background in commercial or industrial real estate
- Experience with investor reporting and joint venture accounting
- Exposure to construction-in-progress and development accounting
