Job Title: Tooling Engineer

Job Description

The Tooling Engineer supports the development, construction, and launch of stamping tooling for high-visibility automotive programs. This role focuses on ensuring tooling manufacturability, process robustness, and production readiness by collaborating closely with engineering, manufacturing, program management, and tool shops. The position plays a key role in die development, tryout, and launch activities for some of the most dynamic and performance-focused vehicles in the portfolio.

Responsibilities

  • Support tooling design reviews to ensure manufacturability, process robustness, and alignment with stamping best practices.
  • Monitor tool construction progress and verify that all tools comply with program requirements, standards, and timing expectations.
  • Coordinate tool tryout activities and support die prove-out to achieve dimensional quality and run-at-rate capability.
  • Identify tooling issues that may impact timing, quality, or manufacturability and drive resolution in a timely manner.
  • Support build events, Production Part Approval (PSW) readiness, and launch milestones by ensuring tooling is prepared and capable.
  • Track and support resolution of Yellow Items and other identified tooling risks throughout the program lifecycle.
  • Coordinate closely with engineering, manufacturing, program managers, and tool shops to ensure tooling readiness for each launch phase.
  • Document tooling issues, communicate status, and support corrective action implementation and validation.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to maintain structured tooling and launch processes and support continuous improvement in tooling performance.
  • Provide technical input during program reviews and respond effectively in potential high-pressure situations related to tooling and launch readiness.

Essential Skills

  • Strong background in stamping tooling construction, tryout, and die development.
  • Hands-on experience working with automotive tool shops and production stamping processes.
  • Solid understanding of die build, tryout, and production readiness requirements for high-volume manufacturing.
  • Proven ability to identify tooling risks and actively support resolution activities from issue detection through closure.
  • Experience working within structured tooling and launch processes (such as STS or similar frameworks).
  • Strong technical problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze tooling issues and recommend effective solutions.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to convey technical information clearly to cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated cross-functional collaboration skills, working effectively with engineering, manufacturing, program management, and suppliers.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, with Mechanical, Industrial, or Electrical disciplines preferred.
  • Experience supporting automotive program launches, particularly in stamping or body-in-white environments.
  • Familiarity with global tool shop operations and working with international suppliers.
  • Understanding of part quality requirements and dimensional validation processes, including methods used to confirm tooling and part conformance.
  • Exposure to continuous improvement initiatives or lean manufacturing principles within a production or launch environment.
  • Interest in or experience with performance and racing-oriented vehicle programs is beneficial.
  • Ability to perform effectively in potential or occasional high-pressure situations with high visibility from senior leadership.

Work Environment

This role is based at a major automotive racing and performance headquarters and focuses on tooling for highly visible, performance-oriented vehicle programs. The position involves close collaboration with local and non-local plants and suppliers, requiring travel to production facilities and tool shops as needed. Occasional international travel, including to locations such as Japan and Canada, may be required for one to two weeks at a time to support tooling tryouts, launches, and supplier engagement. The work environment is dynamic and fast-paced, with significant attention from senior leadership and many stakeholders watching program outcomes. You will work within structured tooling and launch processes, engaging with advanced stamping technologies, die development, and production validation activities. The culture emphasizes technical excellence, robust problem-solving, and cross-functional teamwork, and it expects a high level of capability and professionalism, especially during critical launch and build events.
