Job Description
The Hardware Design Engineer designs, documents, and maintains electrical control system hardware for industrial applications. This role produces accurate, high‑quality electrical schematics, drawings, and bills of materials that comply with UL, NEC, and NFPA standards. The engineer collaborates closely with project engineers, leadership, purchasing, customers, and vendors, and uses strong electrical design fundamentals and hands‑on AutoCAD Electrical experience to support multiple projects while maintaining compliance, quality, and schedule.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate directly with project engineers, team leads, and purchasing to support end‑to‑end project execution for industrial control systems.
- Research, select, and specify electrical hardware and control components based on technical requirements, availability, and compliance needs.
- Develop detailed electrical schematics and engineering drawings for control systems and control panels using AutoCAD Electrical.
- Create electrical drive and control drawings from written and verbal descriptions and translate engineering concepts into clear documentation.
- Ensure drawing accuracy, including correct wiring details, revision control, and consistent use of standards and symbols.
- Generate, review, and maintain accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs) derived from drawings and specifications.
- Maintain and improve AutoCAD Electrical environments, including menus, block libraries, templates, and standards to drive consistency and efficiency.
- Support UL compliance efforts, including adherence to UL508A requirements and preparation of related documentation.
- Apply working knowledge of NEC and NFPA‑79 standards to ensure compliant electrical control system designs.
- Coordinate with purchasing and vendors to confirm component specifications, availability, and suitable alternatives when required.
- Interface professionally with customers and vendors to clarify design requirements, address technical questions, and support procurement and fabrication activities.
- Independently complete drafting and design tasks with minimal supervision while managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Strong understanding of electrical design concepts, components, circuits, and power distribution for industrial control systems.
- 3–5 years of electrical design and CAD experience in an industrial environment.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical 2014 or newer, specifically for industrial controls (beyond basic AutoCAD).
- Proven ability to design industrial control systems, including creation and maintenance of electrical schematics, control panel drawings, and wiring diagrams.
- Ability to generate electrical drive and control drawings from written and verbal descriptions.
- Experience with control circuits, power distribution, drives, starters, relays, contactors, and safety circuits.
- Demonstrated ability to create, review, and maintain accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs).
- Experience selecting electrical components based on specifications, availability, and compliance requirements.
- Working knowledge of UL508A, NEC, and NFPA‑79 standards and their application to industrial control panels.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering specifications and industry standards.
- Strong time‑management skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining quality and accuracy.
- Hands‑on experience with industrial automation hardware and control system design.
- Experience coordinating with purchasing and vendors to support component selection and procurement.
- Background in hardware and electrical design for industrial environments.
- Experience maintaining and standardizing AutoCAD Electrical block libraries, menus, and templates.
- Strong communication skills for effective collaboration with internal teams, customers, and vendors.
- Attention to detail and a commitment to documentation quality, revision control, and compliance.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Eastlake, OH.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $35.00 - $45.00/hr.
