Senior Project Engineer
Overview
The Senior Project Engineer will lead initiatives to improve manufacturing processes at two secondary lead smelting plants. This role involves mechanical design, project management, coordination with internal teams and external contractors, and on-site installation support. Projects often include multi-phase process overhauls and complex equipment installations. Success requires strong analytical skills, hands-on observation in industrial environments, and the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams at multiple sites.
Key Responsibilities
- Design mechanical and process solutions for new equipment, leveraging internal and external resources.
- Develop installation specifications and commissioning plans; provide on-site support during installations.
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring quality and timely delivery.
- Update and maintain engineering documentation (P&IDs, PFDs, equipment drawings) based on field verification.
- Collaborate with Process Engineers, Reliability Engineers, Maintenance Engineers, and plant leadership to build consensus on changes.
- Conduct cost analyses and manage project budgets.
- Research emerging technologies through vendor presentations, conferences, and industry events.
- Perform equipment trials and experiments to validate proposed solutions.
- Partner with Training teams to develop materials for new equipment or process changes.
- Respond promptly to business needs and maintain a strong focus on safety and EHS compliance.

Qualifications
- Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering OR
- Bachelor’s in another engineering discipline plus 5 years of mechanical design experience.
- Experience:
- 10 years in engineering roles within manufacturing, industrial R&D, or military environments.
- 3 years managing custom equipment installations with multidisciplinary contractors.
- Experience working with equipment fabricators and machine shops.
- Familiarity with engineering specialists (structural, CFD, FEA, instrumentation).
- Proficiency in 2D/3D CAD tools (AutoCAD Inventor, SolidWorks).
- Skills:
- Project management, mechanical design, custom equipment development, industrial machinery.
- Strong communication skills and ability to lead change.
- Highly self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to work under pressure during time-sensitive installations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience updating engineering documentation (P&IDs, PFDs).
- Familiarity with project management software (Microsoft Project or similar).
- Background in mining/metals environments.
- Knowledge of gas-fired furnaces or burner design.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Tampa, FL.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $95000.00 - $140000.00/hr.
