Job Title: Phlebotomist

Job Description

This role focuses on providing high-quality phlebotomy services in a fast-paced patient service center, including blood collection, specimen processing, and accurate data handling. The phlebotomist supports smooth workflow by performing blood draws, troubleshooting issues, assisting with training as needed, and making recommendations to improve efficiency while delivering courteous and professional patient care for individuals of all ages.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipunctures and other specimen collections, including blood draws, using straight needles and butterfly needles as appropriate.
  • Collect and store specimens, such as blood, urine, and fecal samples, according to established procedures and protocols.
  • Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients, ensuring they understand each step.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
  • Verify all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy.
  • Package specimens for transport, following all procedures necessary to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Store specimens at the required temperature and place them in the appropriate collection containers or tubes with accurate labeling.
  • Fully understand and interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct tests and procedures are performed.
  • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Update patient information and documentation accurately in the system.
  • Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to address inquiries in a professional and timely manner.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations related to safety, handling, and disposal of specimens and materials.
  • Attend annual department trainings to maintain up-to-date knowledge of procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Contribute to a team-based environment by collaborating with colleagues and supporting a smooth workflow.
  • Assist in troubleshooting workflow or specimen issues and make recommendations to improve processes when appropriate.

Essential Skills

  • Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required in some states.
  • Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy, including blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles.
  • Experience in specimen collection and specimen processing, including labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing specimens.
  • Ability to collect and handle various specimen types, such as blood, urine, and fecal samples, according to protocol.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic data entry and documentation tasks.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Strong customer service skills, with the ability to interact professionally and courteously with patients of all ages.
  • Ability to accurately match requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify test orders.
  • Knowledge of and ability to comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Capability to work effectively in a fast-paced patient service center environment as part of a team.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • 2–4 years of overall experience in a related healthcare or laboratory setting is preferred.
  • Experience working with patients across all age groups is highly desirable.
  • Comfort with answering phones and communicating laboratory results to address inquiries.
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills for handling multiple specimens and tasks.
  • Ability to participate in on-site training and quickly adapt to established procedures and workflows.

Work Environment

This is a non-float phlebotomist position based in East Setauket, NY. The role follows a consistent schedule of Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The phlebotomist typically performs approximately 15 to 35 blood draws per day in a fast-paced setting. Work is performed as part of a collaborative team, with on-site training provided at the same location where duties are carried out. The environment involves regular use of phlebotomy equipment, including straight needles, butterfly needles, centrifuges, and specimen storage systems, and requires adherence to safety and regulatory standards. The setting is clinical and patient-facing, with a focus on efficient, accurate, and professional service delivery.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.15 - $25.16/hr.
