Materials Tester – Field & Laboratory Technician
Job Description
We are seeking motivated Materials Testers to join our growing team supporting transportation and infrastructure projects across the greater Memphis area. This role is ideal for individuals with backgrounds in geology, transportation, civil engineering, environmental science, or materials testing who enjoy a mix of fieldwork, lab analysis, and construction inspection.
As a Materials Tester, you will perform a variety of field and laboratory tests, inspections, and observations on materials such as soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, and steel. You’ll contribute to projects involving roadways, bridges, drainage systems, and utilities, working closely with inspection teams and reporting to the Inspection Supervisor.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct field and lab testing of construction and natural materials using standardized procedures.
- Perform inspections related to earthwork, concrete, asphalt, traffic control, and erosion prevention/sediment control (EPSC).
- Observe and document material compliance with engineering and environmental standards.
- Communicate findings clearly to project managers, engineers, and clients.
- Prepare accurate reports and maintain project documentation.
- Maintain and clean equipment, vehicles, and workspaces.
- Occasionally assist with geotechnical investigations, including drill rig operations.
Essential Skills:
- Familiarity with construction inspection, materials testing, and civil engineering principles.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow testing protocols.
- Effective communication and documentation skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- ACI Field Grade I certification or equivalent.
- Experience with nuclear density testing, concrete sampling, and soil classification.
- Minimum 3 years of experience on transportation or infrastructure projects.
- Certifications such as OSHA 10-hour, TDOT/ACI Concrete Technician, Asphalt Roadway/Plant Technician, Work Zone Traffic Control, and Nuclear Gauge Technician are a plus.
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical or scientific coursework preferred.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
Work Environment:
This position involves fieldwork on active construction sites and may include exposure to varying weather conditions. Safety gear is required. Standard working hours apply, with potential for overtime based on project needs.
Multiple openings throughout the greater Memphis area and the state of Mississippi.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $58000.00 - $65000.00/yr.
