Fire Protection Engineer (Remote)

This remote Fire Protection Engineer role supports projects across North Florida, with a focus on mechanical and MEP design while serving as the primary in-house fire protection resource. The position combines hands-on design of fire protection and life safety systems with multi-discipline coordination, leveraging Revit and modern engineering tools. The role requires residency in Florida within driving distance of the Fort Walton Beach / Panhandle region to support coordination and occasional site visits or client meetings.

Responsibilities

• Design and support fire protection and life safety systems for government, federal, higher education, and institutional projects.
• Prepare, review, and sign/seal engineering calculations, drawings, and technical reports for fire protection and life safety systems.
• Apply NFPA standards, the International Building Code (IBC), and Florida Building Code requirements to all design work.
• Support mechanical and MEP design projects using Revit and related engineering software in a design-firm environment.
• Collaborate closely with architects, internal MEP engineering teams, clients, and authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs) from early design through construction.
• Serve as the primary fire protection resource on staff, with internal support, to meet project and federal work requirements.
• Respond to RFIs, submittals, and design coordination comments in a timely and thorough manner.
• Participate in occasional site visits or client meetings within the local region to support design coordination and construction activities.
• Provide hands-on design work rather than solely performing oversight or project management tasks.
• Support multi-discipline coordination by integrating fire protection and mechanical systems into cohesive project designs.
• Help maintain compliance with federal project requirements by ensuring fire protection engineering capability is available on staff.
• Balance responsibilities between fire protection (approximately 10% of the role initially) and mechanical/MEP design work (majority of the role).

• Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in Florida in an engineering discipline relevant to fire protection and mechanical/MEP design, or EIT completed and actively pursuing PE licensure.
• 5–10 years of fire protection engineering experience, including work with fire sprinkler and fire alarm systems.
• Minimum of 4 years of engineering experience under the supervision of a licensed PE.
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a closely related discipline.
• Strong knowledge of NFPA standards and building codes, including the International Building Code (IBC) and Florida Building Code.
• Experience designing fire protection and life safety systems in a design-firm environment, preferably in MEP consulting.
• Strong Revit-based design experience supporting mechanical and MEP projects.
• Knowledge of mechanical systems and the ability to support multi-discipline coordination.
• Ability and willingness to serve as the primary in-house fire protection engineering resource.
• Residence within driving distance of the Fort Walton Beach / Panhandle region of Florida, with the ability to travel for occasional site visits and meetings.

• Experience working on government, federal, higher education, and institutional projects.
• Experience responding to RFIs, submittals, and design coordination comments during construction.
• Familiarity with AutoCAD, MS Teams, and other modern engineering tools and collaboration platforms.
• Revit experience preferred for fire protection and mechanical/MEP design workflows.
• Ability and willingness to pursue Fire Protection-specific certification if not already obtained.
• Comfort working in a role where fire protection work represents approximately 10% of responsibilities initially, with the majority of time spent on mechanical/MEP design.
• Comfort operating as a sole in-house fire protection resource while leveraging internal support as needed.
• Strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with architects, engineers, clients, and authorities having jurisdiction.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail to manage design documentation and code compliance.
• Interest in becoming a go-to technical expert in fire protection and MEP design while maintaining work-life balance.

This position is primarily remote within Florida, with a requirement to live within driving distance of the Fort Walton Beach / Panhandle region to support occasional site visits and in-person client meetings. The firm is fully remote-enabled and offers strong work-life flexibility, with a hybrid option of 2–3 days in the office per week if desired or required. You will work in a modern engineering environment using tools such as Revit, AutoCAD, and MS Teams, supported by a company-provided laptop, monitors, and IT assistance.
