This role focuses on ensuring materials meet project specifications and industry standards through hands-on testing, detailed observations, and accurate documentation. The position offers comprehensive training and the opportunity to build a long-term career with exposure to retail, industrial, and medical building projects at various stages of development.

Responsibilities

  • Sample hot mix asphalt (HMA) on active construction sites and document test results accurately.
  • Inspect concrete reinforcing steel to verify placement, spacing, and compliance with project requirements.
  • Perform field tests on freshly placed concrete, including slump testing, air content measurements, and molding test cylinders.
  • Conduct soil sampling and density evaluations to confirm compaction and suitability for construction activities.
  • Observe and document installation of deep foundation elements such as piles and drilled caissons.
  • Use standard printed forms to complete clear and accurate daily field reports by hand.
  • Communicate effectively with project team members and clients while on site to coordinate testing activities and address questions.
  • Follow established health and safety procedures and maintain a strong safety mindset in all field activities.
  • Transport testing equipment and materials to and from project sites using a reliable personal vehicle or company vehicle when assigned.
  • Adapt to changing daily work assignments, project locations, and schedules based on project needs.
  • Work occasional night and weekend shifts when required by project schedules.
  • Collaborate professionally and cooperatively with clients, project engineers, and fellow technicians to support successful project delivery.
  • Handle, set up, and move testing equipment weighing up to sixty pounds in a safe and efficient manner.

Essential Skills

  • Demonstrated interest in construction materials testing, including soils, aggregates, asphalt, and concrete.
  • Ability to perform or learn materials testing procedures such as asphalt testing, concrete testing, soil testing, aggregate testing, and density testing.
  • Strong commitment to health and safety and adherence to safety protocols on construction sites.
  • Willingness and ability to take direction from sr. technicians, engineers, and project leaders.
  • Reliable personal vehicle and a valid driver’s license for travel to project sites across Metro Detroit.
  • Good oral and written communication skills for interacting with clients and completing clear daily reports.
  • Ability to pass drug, bg, and reference checks as part of the hiring process.
  • Flexibility to adjust to changing daily assignments, locations, and project priorities.
  • Willingness to work occasional night and weekend shifts when project schedules require it.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with clients and project teams in a professional manner.
  • Physical ability to lift and carry up to sixty pounds of equipment in the field.
  • Basic familiarity with construction materials testing (CMT) concepts or a strong willingness to learn them.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • ACI concrete certification is a strong plus.
  • MCA and other concrete-related certifications are desirable.
  • Experience with density testing and related field testing procedures is beneficial.
  • OSHA 10 safety training or certification is an advantage.
  • Prior experience in concrete inspection or materials testing is helpful but not required, as training is available.
  • Interest in growing a career in civil engineering, construction, or geotechnical services.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team of field technicians and engineers.
  • Comfort working on a variety of project types, including retail, industrial, and medical facilities.

Work Environment

This role is primarily field-based across the Metro Detroit area, including Oakland, Wayne, Genesee, Lapeer, and Washtenaw Counties. Technicians work on commercial construction projects such as retail, industrial, and medical buildings, often visiting multiple sites as projects progress. The company is a Michigan-based engineering consulting firm with over fifty years of success, known for low attrition and a focus on long-term employment. Technicians work alongside approximately 26 other field technicians in a collaborative, team-oriented environment. The organization supports career advancement and internal growth, offering exposure to a wide variety of paving, utilities, structural, and other civil projects. Advanced technologies, along with state-of-the-art laboratory and field testing equipment, support precise materials and geotechnical analysis. Work hours can vary with project demands, and occasional night and weekend shifts may be required.
