What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical Engineer | Senior Mechanical Engineer position at AcousticaBio?
Summary: AcousticaBio is proud to announce this unique opportunity to join our company as a Mechanical Engineer/Senior Mechanical Engineer. We are a venture- and NIH-funded deep-tech startup spun out of Harvard, focused on solving critical challenges in the delivery of novel therapeutics. Our proprietary, Harvard-patented technology revolutionizes fluid processing at the microscale, addressing the limitations of current manufacturing technologies.
This role is ideal for a highly hands-on mechanical engineer who loves designing, building, troubleshooting, and owning complex hardware in a fast-paced startup environment. You will work across mechanical design, mechatronic components, fluid handling, thermal control, prototyping, integration, and testing, in close collaboration with a cross-functional and interdisciplinary team spanning applied physics, materials science, biotech, electronics, and microfabrication.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the hands-on design, development, prototyping, assembly, and testing of our novel, proprietary microparticle production platform.
- Own the mechanical design of mechatronic components and subsystems, from concept generation and detailed CAD design through build, integration, troubleshooting, and iteration.
- Design and implement fluid handling, thermal control, and related hardware systems to enable robust and scalable platform performance.
- Work directly at the bench and in the lab to assemble, test, troubleshoot, and refine prototypes and production-relevant hardware.
- Collaborate closely with internal scientists and engineers, as well as external vendors and partners, to translate system requirements into practical, buildable mechanical solutions.
- Drive creative, analytical problem-solving across design, integration, and scale-up, while helping establish robust engineering practices for product growth.
Desired Experience & Capabilities:
- B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline, with at least 4 years of relevant hands-on experience in mechanical, mechatronic, or product development engineering. Title and level will be commensurate with experience.
- Strong analytical foundation in fluid mechanics and heat transfer, with demonstrated ability to solve complex multidisciplinary engineering problems and implement robust, innovative solutions.
- Strong hands-on experience with prototyping, mechanical assembly, bench testing, troubleshooting, and iterative hardware development.
- High proficiency in CAD and detailed mechanical design for complex assemblies and mechatronic components.
- Experience translating system requirements into practical, buildable mechanical solutions, including collaboration with scientists, engineers, vendors, and external partners.
- Excellent communication skills, strong engineering judgment, and a high level of ownership in a fast-moving, interdisciplinary environment.
- Enthusiasm for a fast-paced startup environment where no task is too small and where strong engineers are excited to design, build, test, and do what it takes to move the product forward.
Bonus Skills:
- Fluid dynamic knowledge, including modeling and/or computational fluid dynamics
- Experience with interfacial phenomena at the microscale
- Mass and heat transfer design and modeling experience
Who We’re Looking For:
A builder/maker/doer/creative thinker who loves making things. If you grew up playing with Legos (or you still play with them), play a musical instrument, if you’ve taken acting classes or like to draw or paint (decks or canvas!), if you ever built your own treehouse, cycled or backpacked the world, repaired your motorcycle, assembled your own computer, got your brewing system controlled via a Raspberry Pi…or done anything that gives you joy from making something - this job and team are for you.
Compensation & Perks:
- Base salary: $100-130k
- Competitive equity package
- 401k with employer match
- Flexible schedule
- Unlimited PTO
- Premium medical and dental coverage
- Yearly and milestone-based bonuses
