Position Summary
The Plant Controller serves as the primary financial steward for the Sturgis manufacturing facility. This role provides strategic financial leadership, ensures integrity of cost accounting processes, and delivers operational insights that enable performance improvement and profitability. The Plant Controller acts as a key business partner to plant leadership, driving financial discipline, supporting continuous improvement initiatives, and ensuring compliance with corporate, regulatory, and accounting standards.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Cost Accounting
- Oversee all plant-level accounting operations including cost accounting, standard cost development, production cost analysis, and period-end close activities.
- Maintain accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs), routings, labor and overhead rates, and standard cost models.
- Lead annual standard cost roll processes and partner with operations to ensure accuracy of cost inputs.
- Conduct detailed variance analysis (labor, material, overhead, production efficiency) and present actionable recommendations.
- Evaluate manufacturing costs and implement cost-reduction, waste elimination, and productivity improvement strategies.
Inventory & Operational Finance Support
- Manage inventory valuation, monthly reconciliations, cycle count programs, and root-cause analysis for inventory discrepancies.
- Monitor work-in-process, finished goods, and raw material levels to ensure accuracy and alignment with operational realities.
- Support Operations, Supply Chain, Quality, and Engineering by providing financial modeling, scenario analysis, and decision support.
- Evaluate capital investments (CapEx), Return on Investment (ROI), and payback analyses for project proposals.
Financial Reporting & Planning
- Prepare and deliver monthly plant financial statements, manufacturing performance dashboards, and KPI reporting packages.
- Lead the plant’s annual budgeting process, quarterly forecasts, and long-term financial planning activities.
- Support corporate finance with consolidated reporting, audit reviews, and compliance documentation.
Controls, Compliance & Process Improvement
- Ensure robust internal controls are maintained in accordance with GAAP, company policies, and audit requirements.
- Identify and implement improvements to financial systems, processes, and data integrity.
- Partner with cross-functional teams to drive operational excellence and enhance visibility into plant performance.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline.
- 8 years of progressive accounting experience, with a minimum of 5 years in a manufacturing or plant finance environment.
- Strong expertise in cost accounting, standard costs, and inventory control.
- Advanced proficiency in Excel and data analytics tools.
- Experience working within a manufacturing ERP system (e.g., SAP, Oracle, JD Edwards, Epicor, Infor).
- Ability to communicate complex financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders.
Preferred
- CPA, CMA, or other relevant certification.
- Experience with lean manufacturing, continuous improvement methodologies, or Six Sigma.
- Familiarity with multi-site operations or multi-stage manufacturing processes.
