QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from four-year college or university
  • Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate endorsed in Early Childhood and Special Education.
  • Bilingual/Spanish speaking preferred

Certificates/Licenses:

  • Will be required to obtain current Food Hander’s Permit. May be required to complete training in First Aid and CPR as required by the District.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Fosters an educational environment conducive to the learning and maturation process of assigned students.
  • Plans individual and group activities to stimulate growth in language, social and motor skills such as learning to listen to instructions, playing with others and using play equipment.
  • Develops and uses instructional materials suitable for verbal or visual instruction of pupils with wide range of mental, physical and emotional maturates.
  • Develops in each pupil an awareness of his/her worth as an individual and his/her role in his/her family and community.
  • Establishes and implements, in a positive and supportive manner, classroom policies and procedures governing student behavior and conduct to provide a productive learning environment.
  • Creates an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, interest centers and exhibits of pupils’ work.
  • Provides individual and small group instruction designed to meet individual needs of pupils in communications skills, health habits, physical skills and development of self-concepts.
  • Plans and coordinates the work of para-educators, parents and volunteers in the classroom and on field trips. Works cooperatively with administration and staff to develop and implement instructional programs and activities.
  • Attends in-service training and continues to improve professional growth through study and experimentation to remain current in methods and techniques for instruction.
  • Communicates regularly with parents by means of a newsletter, notes, phone calls, individual parent conferences and home visits.
  • Interprets school program to parents in order to strengthen parental understanding of the individual pupil’s need and the school’s role in the pupil’s life.
  • Enriches educational program through study trips to community resources such as museums, parks and through classroom visits by resource person from the school and community. Shares and interprets these experiences with pupils and parents.
  • Promotes parent participation and involvement in education activities provided for their children.
  • Evaluates and records student progress.
  • Prepares and maintains required records and reports.
  • Collects and interprets a variety of data.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • The employee supervises students in the class, parents and volunteers.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to plan and implement instructional program to meet needs of diverse learners.
  • Knowledge of curriculum and needs of students with learning, behavioral, or emotional disabilities.
  • Knowledge of various instructional strategies, classroom management skills, including behavioral strategies, interventions, and observation recording.
  • Ability to work and teach in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Experience and/or training with cultural, ethnic, and language diversity desired.
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of student to whom assigned.
  • Current knowledge of child development theory and its implications for teaching and learning.
  • Knowledge of current classroom management techniques and ability to apply strategies to provide a productive learning environment.
  • Knowledge of special education laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of state learning goals and assessments.
  • Commitment and ability to plan and work with a full range of students including gifted, mainstreamed special education, transitional bilingual students and students from diverse cultural and social backgrounds.
  • Ability to use varied assessments, including performance tasks, portfolios and student self-assessment.
  • A strong and positive attitude that each student can learn and has the right and capacity to achieve personal academic excellence.
  • Knowledge/experience with new state assessment and learning requirements.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community. Ability to work in a collaborative or team approach.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff both in written or verbal form.
  • Ability to read and analyze and interpret professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff and the general public.
  • Evidence of classroom management skills to provide a productive learning environment
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.

SALARY: 25-26 AEA Salary Schedule. 26-27 TBD.
