Overview
Join the editorial and production (EDP) team as an Editorial Assistant supporting the transformation of book manuscripts into finished printed volumes. In this full-time campus role, you help manage text corrections, quality checks, and communication with authors and freelancers to maintain the high standards of the press.
Key responsibilities
- Edit manuscripts (or supervise freelance editors) to ensure clear organization, consistent style, correct grammar, and accurate content
- Oversee the work of freelance editors, proofreaders, and indexers
- Act as the main point of contact for authors throughout the book-making process
- Coordinate with book designers, the EDP manager, and marketing on editorial-related production and promotion decisions
- Prepare and mark up manuscripts according to typography and typesetting specifications
- Check and verify corrections, review final page proofs and printer’s proofs before print
- Prepare manuscripts for freelance copy editors using house styles or typesetting codes
- Handle other clerical and administrative tasks as assigned
Required qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field
- At least 1 year of experience in book production or a similar publishing environment
- Familiarity with word processing and desktop publishing tools, including Adobe Creative Suite
Preferred qualifications
- 2 years of experience in book publishing
- Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently
- Experience with XML, Scribe Well-Formed Document Workflow (WFDW), ebook conversion, accessibility standards, and spreadsheet systems
- Relevant college coursework may substitute for part of the required experience
