General Introduction
The Pastoral Minister extends the ministry of the Archbishop and provides a pastoral presence at the assigned Department of Corrections facility, and serves as a resource on criminal justice issues for local Catholic parishes and faith communities.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain a consistent and effective pastoral presence at the assigned facility through dialogue with the Department of Corrections administration regarding access to prison residents and policies and procedures for the prison.
- Facilitate the presence of priests for the celebration of Mass, and the Sacraments of Penance and Anointing of the Sick when appropriate.
- Coordinate and conduct appropriate liturgical services when a priest is not available.
- Engage in pastoral listening and presence with prison residents as needed.
- Recruit and train volunteers within the assigned facility. (i.e., direct ministry to prison residents)
- Facilitate bible studies, retreats, faith formation classes, RCIA processes, prayer experiences, etc. during designated Catholic activity sessions.
- Attend regular supervision meetings with the Director of Pastoral Care & Outreach.
Qualifications:
Essential Qualifications
- Primary:
- Willingness and ability to support the mission of the Church by extending the ministry of the Archbishop and providing a pastoral presence in the assigned facility.
- Ability and desire to use God-given gifts and talents in service of the local Church in support of the collaboration between lay and ordained Ministers.
- Ability to apply the Catholic faith to those affected by crime and incarceration.
- Active member of a parish/faith community in good standing with the Church.
- Education:
- Bachelors degree in Theology, Religious Studies, or related field required.
- Masters degree in Theology, Religious Studies or related field preferred.
- Clinical Pastoral Education certification or equivalent preferred.
- Experience:
- At least two year’s experience in pastoral ministry.
- Demonstrated experience in leading prayer.
- Other Elements:
- Ability to qualify for work in a Department of Corrections facility.
- Ability to work with both marginalized and diverse populations.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed care and substance abuse and its related dynamics.
- Bi-lingual (Spanish/English) preferred.
Any offered salary is determined based on internal equity, internal salary ranges, market data, applicant’s skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications.
