Residential & Light Commercial Generator Field Service Technician

You start the morning reviewing your service queue and mapping the most efficient route inside your one-hour travel radius. First stop: a 20 kW residential standby unit throwing a fault. You pull the covers, read the wiring diagram, and quickly trace the issue to a control signal. After a clean repair and a friendly walkthrough with the homeowner, you document the job with a clear service report. By midday, you’re onsite with a light commercial rental genset for scheduled preventive maintenance—oil, filters, diagnostics—and a full test of the automatic transfer switch and controls. Later, you consult on a larger installation, applying your exposure to 200–500 kW commercial systems and knowledge from seeing 1 MW industrial units in the field. You finish the day by organizing your service vehicle, updating your schedule, and confirming tomorrow’s calls.

• Hands-on preventive maintenance, fault diagnostics, and repairs on standby and rental generator sets—residential through larger industrial applications
• Use wiring diagrams and schematics to isolate and resolve electrical issues
• Perform engine diagnostics on natural gas and diesel platforms
• Test and verify operation of automatic transfer switches (ATS) and control systems
• Create thorough, professional service documentation and reports
• Communicate findings, options, and recommendations clearly to customers
• Work independently in the field, managing time, priorities, and a professional schedule
• Maintain a clean, organized, well-equipped service vehicle

• 2–3 years of direct experience with standby and rental gensets
• Proficiency with natural gas and diesel engine systems
• Ability to read schematics/wiring diagrams and execute systematic troubleshooting, including root cause analysis
• Primary experience with 20–150 kW residential/light commercial units; exposure to 200–500 kW commercial units and 1 MW industrial systems is highly valued
• Hands-on experience with Cummins and Kohler generators required; familiarity with MTU, CAT, Generac, or other major brands is a plus
• Knowledge of fuel systems: natural gas required; diesel and bi‑fuel experience is a plus
• Familiarity with emissions systems meeting Tier 4 standards preferred
• Clean driving record and ability to cover jobs within a one-hour travel radius
• Professional demeanor, strong communication skills, and a customer-first mindset
