Waste Manager Job Description

The Waste Manager will be tasked to manage all aspects of waste-related activities for BGI projects. This position will oversee the planning and implementation of waste-related activities, including, but not limited to, all necessary waste and waste-transport documentation, procurement of containers, proper packaging, transportation, and disposal to a client-approved waste facility. The WM will carefully review waste and waste transport documents to ensure all documents are complete for waste-related activities. This person will work closely with Project Managers, Field Team Leaders, and customers to ensure waste is properly characterized, containerized, shipped, and disposed of. The WM is self-motivated and has excellent written, verbal communication, and computer skills .

Key Responsibilities

  • Safely and compliantly lead waste-related activities for BGI projects.
  • Work under the supervision of Project Managers and alongside field leads.
  • Develop BGI waste management standard operating procedures and/or guidelines to ensure RCRA and Permit compliance.
  • Perform procedure reviews to ensure RCRA and Permit compliance
  • Provide guidance and/or applicable training to BGI staff regarding compliance and management of all applicable waste streams including New Mexico Special Waste, RCRA waste, Radioactive waste, TSCA waste, and any others.
  • Conduct internal audits and support external regulatory audits.
  • Interface with the client and, as necessary, LANL waste staff and managers, DOE, state and federal stakeholders. and regulators.
  • Perform site/project-specific inspections/audits and assessments of operations and facilities associated with the site/project-specific objectives.
  • Work with BGI Project Managers and Field Team Leaders to plan and execute waste characterization sampling events.
  • Collect waste samples and prepare/package/document for shipping to analytical laboratory.
  • Utilize and navigate Los Alamos Waste Compliance and Tracking System (WCATS), or equivalent.
  • Coordinate the acquisition of waste containers for on-site use with client waste management operations liaison.
  • Manage waste containers on site (responsible for documenting weights, ensure proper labeling and posting, closure of waste containers, staging of waste containers).
  • Work with the client to prepare and schedule waste shipments.
  • Review waste characterization results to meet disposal requirements.
  • Coordinate the release and demobilizing of all waste containers back to the client.
  • Prepare the waste management project summary report at the end of each project phase.
  • Participate in daily and weekly meetings with client as required.
  • Office activities include analysis and interpretation of analytical results and data, assistance with the preparation of reports and technical documents associated with field sampling and other field related tasks.
  • Maintain spreadsheets/databases of chemical/radiological analytical results and other data for projects, prepare charts, conduct routine scientific calculations and run computer programs.
  • Must have attention to detail and produce high quality, error free documents.
  • Follow company safety standards, participate in safety training and assisting the preparation and implementation of site safety plans.

Basic/Required Qualifications

  • 5–10 years of environmental waste management or equivalent experience.
  • BS in engineering/health physics, environmental science, or another related field.
  • Current 40-hour HAZWOPER OSHA or 8-hour refresher certified, or the ability to obtain certification.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with multiple disciplines, subject matter experts, and organizational leaders.
  • Strong communication, writing, verbal, and presenting skills including the ability to author and present technical documents, test plans, project documentation, and training to a wide variety of audiences.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Open to flexible to work outside normal business hours, as required.
  • Willingness to travel to other BGI offices or project sites, as needed.
  • Knowledge of transportation and disposal of LLW, MLLW, and hazardous waste and materials.
  • Understand and adhere to all Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), state, federal, and industry regulatory guidance specific to the waste management of solid, liquid, hazardous, radioactive, and/or mixed wastes.
  • Possess a working knowledge of regulatory requirements applicable to waste management and transportation, including EPA, DOT, and DOE.
  • Knowledge and working experience with RCRA regulations, including experience working with hazardous and mixed waste streams.
  • Must be a United States citizen
  • Must be able to obtain a security clearance, if necessary.
  • Must pass drug test, physical, and background check and must have a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the Company's driving policy.

Additional Desired Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of existing LANL DOE waste management software application, preferably WCATS or the IWTS.
  • Experience and working knowledge utilizing WCATS (read and write), Low-Track Software, and Waste Profile Systems from various TSDF.
  • Experience as a waste certification officer.
  • Experience working Los Alamos-area remediation and/or waste projects.

Work Type: Light Work

  • Employee should expect ~50% office, 50% field work in a variety of weather conditions, some of which may be adverse.
  • Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for sedentary office work.
  • The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; kneel, crouch, use hands, and reach with hands and arms for field-related activities.
