Kentucky College of Art Design - Job Description

Job Title: Financial Controller

Job Location: 505 W Ormsby Ave, Mansion Headquarters

Reports to: CFO (Reports to President in interim)

Classification: Full-time Exempt

Part I - Position Description

The Financial Controller provides leadership and oversight of all financial aspects of the College. The Controller is responsible for supervision of the day-to-day financial operations of the College including accounts receivable, accounts payable, general ledger, fixed asset management, cash management and payroll.

The position works closely with the CFO for presentation of financial statements, financial analysis, and other key reports to senior management and the Finance Committee of the College's Board of Trustees. The individual in this role assists with the College's financial and accounting affairs and ensures that the College's fiscal practices comply with federal, state, and local rules and regulations, as well as with the College's policies and procedures. This position also assists with the development and implementation of the College's annual budget planning.

Part II - Responsibilities

  • Oversee the institution's fiscal activity, including budgeting, reporting, internal audit, external audit, and Form 990
  • Identify and address financial risks and opportunities for the College
  • Prepare financial reports and analysis for internal and external uses, within required deadlines
  • Apply proper GAAP standards to ensure the accuracy of financial data
  • Establish and maintain a documented system of accounting procedures that best accomplish and are aligned with the institution's mission, goals, and objectives
  • Develop and enforce internal controls and corporate accounting policies and procedures
  • Ensure legal, contractual, and regulatory documents are filed and monitor compliance with laws and regulations
  • Act as supervisor to Accounting Assistant
  • Manage the general ledger, close, and reporting, including monthly reconciliation of all finances
  • Manage payroll processing and compliance in coordination with Human Capital Management (HCM)
  • Complete bank deposits and withdrawals
  • Manage accounts payable function, including procurement requests and reimbursements
  • Attend meetings of the Board of Trustees upon request
  • Reliable and timely attendance at the job location

  • Other duties as assigned

Part III - Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree (preferably in accounting, finance, or information systems).
  • Combined experience/education may serve as substitute for minimum education requirement.
  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience in a similar role and similar environment (preferred). 
  • Experience as Financial Controller in the nonprofit and/or higher education sector(s) (highly preferred).
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Ability to perform the work as outlined in the position description and responsibilities sections above.
  • This position requires the ability to lift 30lbs (approx.) and must be able to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
