POSITION SUMMARY

Under the guidance and supervision of the Community Operations Director, the Youth Yoga Instructor is responsible for the safety, supervision, programming, and involvement of participants instructing an age-appropriate yoga curriculum for kids. Prior experience working with kids in some relatable capacity is required. This is a seasonal, grant funded position and schedule to end June 2024.

QUALIFICATIONS

CERTIFICATIONS & EDUCATION:

  • 200-hour Accredited Yoga Certification & requisite certified training hours
  • Youth Yoga Certification (preferred)
  • Bachelor's Degree (preferred)
  • Group Exercise Certification (preferred)
  • Yoga/mindfulness community-focused, or non-profit work (preferred)
  • NEOP/new employee orientation (mandatory upon hire)
  • Child Abuse Prevention, Workplace Harassment training, Positive Child Discipline, and all current relevant YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles required trainings (mandatory upon hire)
  • As a condition of employment to continue to work for the Y, staff will be required to complete and/or keep updated any and all relevant trainings and certifications
    • As current non-Y certifications lapse and/or require renewal/recertification through a 3rd party vendor, staff may keep those certifications current at their own expense.

SPECIALIZED SKILLS:

  • Strong character values; communication skills
  • Eagerness and desire to work with kids with diverse abilities in a school environment
  • Ability to plan age-appropriate lessons
  • Familiarity with classroom management
  • Flexibility and ability to accommodate changes in schedule, venue, staffing as program needs determine

RELATED EXPERIENCE:

  • Prior experience working with kids in some relatable capacity is required.
  • Previous experience as an educator: teacher, instructor, etc., with verifiable classroom hours highly preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • You must have the physical, visual, and auditory ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Create a welcoming environment by greeting students by name with a smile and eye contact.
  2. Plan and lead sessions in one or more assigned recreation areas, such as yoga and mindfulness, by implementing effective teaching methods, and giving equal attention to all participants.
  3. Responsible for administering professional and effective program-specific skills according to course description.
  4. Set up and monitor class equipment, ensuring equipment remains in working condition. Report all equipment repair needs to supervisor immediately.
  5. Advise participants on program and class procedures and policies, as appropriate.
  6. Distribute handouts and/or class evaluations, if appropriate, and answer questions from participants after each session.
  7. Participate in a peer-review exercise.
  8. Develop positive relationships with participants and provide motivational support and guidance to support members in their healthy living goals.
  9. Address students who are not performing exercises correctly by demonstrating proper form and techniques.
  10. Encourage student involvement in all classes.
  11. Perform other duties and responsibilities. Complete additional projects and reports as required.
  12. Attend all staff meetings, trainings and workshops as required.
  13. Uphold YMCA policies for safety, supervision, mandated reporting and risk management.
  14. Demonstrate the Six Pillars of Character (Trustworthiness, Citizenship, Respect, Responsibility, Caring, and Fairness) as well as the YMCA Core Values of caring, respect, honesty and responsibility in all dealings with members, guests, volunteers and fellow staff.
  15. Demonstrate competencies in and willingness to develop in the Cause Driven Leadership areas of mission advancement, collaboration, operational effectiveness and personal growth.
  16. All other duties as assigned by your supervisor.
