Veterinary Teaching Hospital
At the CSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH), we exist to educate the next generation of veterinarians by providing exceptional veterinary care and service to the community every day. This work unit exists to care for the basic needs of animals at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, and to provide routine disinfection and service to all areas of the hospital, which serves as a teaching facility for veterinary students, as a medical facility for veterinary research, and as a public animal health clinic for exotic, large and small animals.

Position Summary
  • This Veterinary Technician position primarily provides patient care for clinical equine cases in the Critical Care, Medicine, and Surgery & Lameness services whose treatments are being overseen by faculty, residents and interns. Depending on caseload in Critical Care and Medicine this position might also be asked to assist in Livestock Medicine, Large Animal Radiology and other large animal services.
  • This position requires a knowledge of various medical procedures, biosecurity surveillance, and proper equipment usage. This position will assist in the case management on a day-to-day basis by providing support services such as stocking, cleaning and maintaining equipment after use, and providing continuity of patient care.
  • Additionally, this position provides direction of junior and senior veterinary students and their responsibilities related to patient care within the equine hospital.
This is an essential worker position and must be willing and able to report to work as directed to perform essential and/or emergency services without delay or interruption.
The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date; the department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
A signing bonus may be considered for eligible and successful candidates.

This is a part-time position, typically working 30 hours/week. Additional working hours may be required depending on department’s needs. Hours are primarily overnights and weekends
Required Job Qualifications
  • An associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in veterinary/animal health technology.
AND
  • One year of experience assisting in animal surgery, administering anesthesia to animals and/or performing veterinary surgery.
Two years of experience as defined by the department will substitute for each year of required education. A bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree from an accredited college or university in veterinary/animal health technology will substitute for the associate’s degree and, at the agency’s discretion, the year of experience.
  • Must have the ability to safely and proficiently handle horses and foals for medical procedures and evaluations. Minimum 1 year of equine experience.
  • Registered as a Veterinary Technician (RVT) or Provisional Veterinary Technician (PVT) through the Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA), or eligibility to obtain a state of Colorado DORA license by start date.
  • Credentialed in the State of Colorado or other eligible state determined by CACVT.
  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date; the department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Equine Hospital and Critical Care Nursing
Duty/Responsibility
  • Provides nursing and technical support within the collaborative effort of the team of veterinary technicians and clinical faculty by performing nursing best practices on equine veterinary patients, while instructing veterinary students with proper technique of various medical procedures. These include; proper collection and understanding of normal and abnormal hematology values, proper collection and administration of whole blood and plasma, venipuncture, intramuscular and subdermal injections, oral administration of medication, IV catheterization and maintenance, fluid administration and maintenance, proper placement and usage of nasogastric tubes including refluxing technique, electro diagnostic procedures, endoscopy and related procedures, blood pressure Doppler measurements, EKG, abdominocentesis, cystocentesis, ophthalmic treatments, proper assessment and understanding of parameter values, therapeutic management and diagnostic sample submission within equine critical care, emergency medicine, internal medicine, soft tissue and orthopedic cases.
  • Provides nursing and technical support for Equine Emergency Critical Care by providing critical thinking and skill sets sought by the team to be applied to a variety of equine emergency situations and cases. To include the scope of; basic colic work up, lacerations, infectious diseases, isolation care and critically, life threatening cases.
  • Instruct and support PVM students with respect to their assigned equine patients offering experience, skill set, and knowledge of nursing care for the critical and non-critical patients, neonatal, soft tissue and orthopedic cases. Providing instruction for catheter application and care, sepsis recognition, post-operative complication awareness, as well as pain management observation and recognition. Have complete confidence understanding equine behavior in order to safely administer chemical or manual restraint when necessary within a hospital or stressful environment.
  • Communicate with clientele and offer community support and education in basic veterinary care following surgery or procedures. Provide comfort and basic grief counseling during “end of life decisions”. Be an advocate for the veterinary team by communicating the needs of the client to the veterinary team and vice versa.
  • Collaborates work duties or tasks within the nursing team in order to continue to provide an efficient working and harmonious hospital environment, while providing best standard of care practice within the equine hospital.
  • Outpatient duties include handling equine patients for evaluation and lameness exams, the moving of patients from stall to other areas for testing (radiology, surgery, ultrasound). This requires knowledge and experience in handling stallions, gelding, mares, and foals; with the knowledge of different behaviors and environmental hazards. Duties include preparation of nerve, and intra-articular joint injections; which includes knowledge an equine anatomy, injection sites, clipping, and aseptic preparation of the area. Responsible for patient restraint and safety during procedures, including twitching and/or chemical restraint. This requires the ability and knowledge to preform and teach I.V. injections. Preparation or supervision for the set-up of patient stalls with the proper bedding, feed, and water is also required.

  • This position is responsible for biosecurity awareness by leading by example and educating clients within the Equine barn. Learn process to appropriately clean and store equipment between uses to protect biosecurity of equipment. Participate in the annual process of deep cleaning of the equine hospital. Uphold information presented to DVM and FRCC students within orientation that includes basic knowledge of the working function of the main hospital and equine isolation unit.
  • Assist in instructing professional Veterinary Medical Students and Veterinary Technicians with intravenous catheter placement, operation room procedures, surgical clips, correct positioning of patient, and aseptically preparing surgical and injection sites. Assist with emergency procedures such as lacerations, acute fractures, abdominal centesis; and bandaging and cast application.
