Job Summary:
This role is a member of the Libraries Business Operations Support team. The individual is responsible for proactively creating and sustaining a welcoming and safe environment for all students, staff, faculty, and members of the public who visit the Northwestern University Libraries. The Building Safety and Operations Assistant will open and/ or close Main, Deering, and Mudd Libraries, as well as make regular rounds to ensure the areas are welcoming, operational, functional, and that our patrons are following our building use policy. This position supports and assists with special events, especially in evenings and weekends. Along with other Library staff, the Building Safety and Operations Assistant will contribute and assist with regular customer service and provide de-escalation assistance. The individual will assist in emergency evacuation situations, if necessary. The Building Safety and Operations Assistant will assist Access Services, Welcome Desk, the Information Commons Desk and other customer service as back-up on an as needed basis. The Building Safety and Operations Assistant conveys a professional and service-oriented attitude and provides conflict resolution when the moments arise. If needed, the Building Safety and Operations Assistant acts as a liaison on the library's behalf to NU Police, Facilities, Aramark staff, and other outside vendors/library partners. This role reports to the Building Safety and Operations Coordinator.

Work Schedule: Rotating schedule covering Main, Deering & Mudd Libraries including swing shifts & overnights.
Summer: Rotating schedule covering Main, Deering, & Mudd Libraries including daytime and swing shifts.
Intersessions: Rotation Sunday-Saturday during library business hours.
Working Conditions:
* Duties mainly take place in a controlled inside environment but infrequently will be outside. Position involves physical activity of standing, walking, and bending/kneeling.
* Must be able to move and lift up to 30 pounds.
The target budgeted minimum starting rate for this position is $19.88 - $22.35 per hour. Offers will be based on candidate experience, education, and equity within Northwestern University. This position is fully on-site and will work a minimum of 18.75 hours a week.
Specific Responsibilities:
Operations, Safety, and Customer Service:
* Complete building rounds in efforts to maintain a welcoming and safe presence for staff, students, and visitors in our spaces.
* Understand, enforce, and follow Library security, access and building policies.
* Report any suspicious activity such as thefts, vandalism, assaults, harassment, or patrons exhibiting threatening or severely disruptive behavior to police.
* Deliver great customer service and able to de-escalate situations; when needed, escalate appropriate instances to supervisor or NUPD.
* Operates and carries two-way radio during work hours, responding immediately and in an appropriate manner.
* Respond and assist with emergency evacuation situations, when necessary. Serve as a communication liaison to fellow staff/patrons and to First responders.
* Periodically check communications channels such as the FOSM email, security listserv, MS Teams channel and respond appropriately.
* Can be scheduled to cover the welcome desk or provided back-up coverage as needed.
* Assists with incident report logs, trouble patron files, and Workgroup SharePoint.
* Opens and/or closes Main, Deering, and Mudd Libraries.
* Acquire CPR/AED training within 6 months.
Facilities Operations:
* Check for and report facility concerns/issues in University facilities system, as well as Library facilities staff and/or University facilities.
* Ensures the library is a welcoming and safe environment. Periodically organizes and straightens up common spaces. Notifies cleaning staff if needed
* Assists with facility related projects.
* Assists with moving furniture, event room setup/take down, and Library special events.
Additional Responsibilities:
* Maintain accurate head counts of users at Mudd, University, and Deering Library.
* Update team members with shift report to record activities during assigned shift.
* Assist and train security students during assigned shifts.
* Attend committee, department, and library-wide meetings.
* Attend relevant presentations and workshops.
* Other duties as assigned.
Miscellaneous
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
* High school diploma.
* Minimum one year security and/or customer service experience, or equivalent education and training from which applicable skills can be acquired.
