Full-time Lead Ophthalmic Technician

Plymouth Meeting, PA

Primary Function:
  • Under minimal supervision, the Lead Ophthalmic Technician ensures the efficient organization and operation of all technical functions performed by ophthalmic technical staff within the clinic practices. Additional, this position supports the Clinic Manager in providing oversight and assessment of technical duties in conformance with all Hospital policies and best practices.
General Ophthalmic Technical Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Oversees the efficient flow of patients through the eye clinic, assuring that resources are sufficient for scheduled patients and that they are directed appropriately.
  • Provides a variety of preliminary ocular assessment activities, including but not limited to, obtaining a complete and accurate medical history, visual acuity and stereo testing, lensometry, motility, applanation tonometry, pupil dilation, potential acuity meter testing and, and manifest refraction/autorefractometry.
  • Provides assistance to the physician with examination procedures and other patient care activities as requested. When appropriate, performs lensometry, including reading lenses with multifocal and progressive adds, and determines power of sphere, axis of cylinder power and orientation of prism.
  • Performs intraocular pressure assessments through the use of applanation tonometry and also utilizing the tonopen.
  • Instills dilating drops (and other ophthalmic drops) per physician's instructions.
  • Interacts and communicates in a professional manner with fellow employees, medical staff and other health team professionals.
  • Ensures that exam rooms are stocked with appropriate instruments, as well as patient handouts, & any other equipment/materials, as required by physicians.
  • Formulates and maintains effective working relationships with peers, managers and other members of the health care team.
  • Receives constructive feedback in a positive self-develop-mental manner.
  • Functions as an effective team member.
  • Demonstrate adaptability, flexibility, and accountability when changes are made in job description and responsibility, including performing all qualified duties throughout other areas of the Hospital.
  • Strives to maintain the confidentiality of all patients and their families/significant other(s).
  • Position-specific Proficiencies:
  • Monitors the quality of patient screening and work-ups, documentation, and communication with physicians.
  • Provides in-service and training of staff, reviews proficiency of technical responsibilities and offers appropriate recommendations to practice management.
  • Partners with the Department of Human Resources and clinic management in the recruitment and onboarding of newly hired ophthalmic technicians to ensure they are able to successfully perform the various skills associated with the practice, including but not limited to completing medical and ophthalmic history, visions, scribing, OCTs, laser preparations, injections, equipment maintenance and repair, entering and receiving computer data.
  • Responsible for the requisition of supplies, maintaining stock in exam and procedure rooms; and the timely maintenance of clinical equipment to minimize down time; performs first level maintenance on ophthalmic equipment, communicates need for repairs or replacement to office manager and administration.
  • Interfaces with vendors/suppliers to schedule regular equipment maintenance and repairs as required.
  • Enhances clinic practice reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing various requests and explores opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
  • Position Requirements
    Qualifications
    Educational requirements:
    • HS diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor's degree preferred
    Certification/Licensure:
    • Current Certification as an Ophthalmic Assistant (COA)
    Experience:
    • Five (5) years' medical practice experience
    • Three (3) years' experience in a supervisory role
    • One (1) year clinical experience in Ophthalmology as a COA
    • Knowledgeable in ocular pharmacology such as anesthetics, steroids, antibiotics, mydriatics and cycloplegics, epinephrine, miotics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories.
    • Uses effective communication skills with patients and staff; demonstrates proper telephone techniques and etiquette; acts as an escort to any patient or family member needing directions; shows sensitivity to differences of culture; demonstrates a positive and supportive manner in which patients / families/ colleagues perceive interactions as positive and supportive
    • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees, managers, administrators and physicians
    • Proficiency in medical terminology, CPT and ICD 10 coding for ophthalmology
    • Exhibits tact and professionalism in difficult situations

    Works in a clean, well-lit, and ventilated work area.
    Physical requirements
    Walking and standing; stooping, bending, balancing and sitting. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
