United Veterans Beacon House is Hiring an Emergency Shelter Support Staff - Western Suffolk Near Bay Shore, NY

POSITION: DSS Support Staff
STATUS: Non-Exempt Part-Time
SHIFTS: 3pm-11pm & 11pm-7am, Including Weekends
SALARY: $20.00 Per Hour
PURPOSE
Maintain day to day operations on-site within the shelter system. Ensure the safety and well-being of all program participants. Conduct shelter intakes and enforce compliance with shelter policies and procedures. Document all activity which takes place within the shelter during the shift. Serve as a point of contact and monitor the house.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Strong communication skills, customer service skills, organizational skills, and computer literacy.
  • Capable of multi-tasking and being flexible within their role.
  • Prompt and Courteous phone manner.
  • Knowledge of telephone, computer, and security procedures for the company.
Essential Job Functions
  • Support Staff is responsible for the safety of all clients (including children in family shelter settings) as well as daily shelter maintenance.
  • Conducts client intakes and enforces client compliance with shelter policies and procedures.
  • Documents all shelter activities, writes incident reports and staff memos.
  • Briefs incoming staff member on shelter activity. Brings incoming staff member up to dare on daily client census.
  • Begins shift by surveying shelter conditions to maintain safety and cleanliness. Documents any issues found.
  • Conducts morning and evening room checks.
  • Maintains shelter property safety, especially during inclement weather.
  • Answers shelter door. Ensures shelter doors remain closed and locked at all times.
  • 11pm-7am shift activates the shelter security system each night and deactivates each morning.
  • Reports any security system problems and maintenance needs.
  • Monitors client arrivals and departures, assuring each client signs in and out of the shelter indicating the arrival time and departure.
  • Documents all client absences and reports to DSS Emergency Services and weekend client absence.
  • Monitors and documents all staff and visitor arrivals and departures.
  • Requests and photocopies identification from all visitors.
  • Monitors weekday quiet time; encouraging educational activities and homework completion when necessary.
  • Oversees meal preparation and dinner hour.
  • Oversees chore completion.
  • Provides crisis intervention and mediation as needed.
  • Arranges medical and other emergency services for clients in need.
  • Informs Program Director when emergency services (fire, police, EMTP) are called to the shelter. Requests and documents police officers' names and badge numbers.
  • Conducts monthly fire drills and safety maintenance.
  • Remains up to date on safety, emergency and evacuation plan procedures.
  • Regularly reviews shelter policies and procedures.
  • Attends staff meetings.
Additional Job Functions
  • Workers are representatives of United Veterans Beacon House and are, therefore, expected to conduct themselves in a way that reflects accountability to the agency, the community, and the client system.
  • Does not abuse sick time or personal days.
  • Consistently reports to work on time and is ready to begin work at the start of the shift.
  • Always provides proper notification when late or absent.
  • Available to work overtime when necessary.
  • Demonstrates the ability to recognize priorities in the organization of workflow.
  • Able to perform duties independently, with minimal need of direct supervision.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of clients, shelter/programs, agency and or United Veterans Beacon House.
  • Reports to work well-groomed and in compliance with dress code.
  • Wears ID Badge while on duty.
  • Demonstrates the ability to interact in a positive and helpful manner clients, visitors, contract staff, volunteers, and co-workers.
  • Reflects commitment to building a supportive work environment and maintains a positive attitude at the workplace and towards job.
  • Projects a good image in dealing with the public clients.
  • Is willing to make an extra effort to help build a quality and caring shelter/program.
  • Employees may be required to carry out other duties as assigned.
