As the Village of Glenview embarks on a number of significant new developments and the revitalization of our Downtown District, we're seeking an enthusiastic and visionary Planner to play a pivotal role in shaping this transformation.
In addition to working on large-scale developments and supporting the redevelopment of Downtown Glenview, you'll be responsible for crafting regulations and policies that will shape the community's character and ensure its vibrancy for generations to come. This role offers a unique chance to make recommendations on major projects, create spaces with a distinct sense of place, and influence how people interact with their environment in our dynamic community.

Summary: The Village of Glenview is seeking a full-time Planner I. This position provides professional and administrative work assisting the Community Development Department.
Under the guidance of the Planning Division Manager, this position is responsible for assisting in the implementation of Planning Division functions, programs and processes. These activities includes assisting in the preparation of New Development Commission and Development Adjustments Commission (and at times the Environment and Natural Resources Commission) background materials, reviewing and analyzing development proposals, rezoning requests, site plans, appearance approvals, variations, conditional uses and other projects for conformance with codes, plans and regulations, interpreting codes, granting administrative approvals, creating new policies and requirements, and developing short- and long-range plans.
Job Duties:
  • Provides responsive and timely customer service to stakeholders (i.e., citizens, businesses, petitioners, other departments, outside agencies, consultants, commissions) by responding to in-person, phone or written correspondence, to address questions, complaints, or escalations in a professional and timely manner with a goal of an amicable resolution.
  • Reviews requirements and sets customer expectations, writes technical reports, communicates status of reviews with applicant, ensures all construction complies with approved plans, drawings, documents, standards and codes, and files all paperwork.
  • Responds to inquiries regarding planning, zoning, historic preservation, natural resource, and economic development issues.
  • Discusses and provides direction to staff and customers regarding complex code compliance matters and utilizes technical expertise to evaluate interpretations from policies and procedures.
  • Performs liaison duties and attends committee, commission, Board, or public meetings and prepares and presents public presentations.
  • Supports economic develop initiatives.
  • Identifies and recommends policy, procedures, or ordinance changes.
  • Coordinates legal notices for publication and distribution.
  • Coordinates the review and issuance of certain licenses, including outdoor dining and business licenses.
  • Prepares plats for recordings and coordinate with Village Attorney on recording of documents with Cook County Recorder of Deeds.
  • Reviews draft documents for compliance and completeness and maintains accurate records, case files, and logs.
  • Reviews and assigns address requests.
  • Reviews small to medium-sized permits for issuance and assists with zoning enforcement.
  • Completes special projects, as assigned, including interdepartmental projects.
Qualifications:
Qualified candidates should have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, with coursework in Urban Planning, Public Policy, Public Administration, Architecture, Construction Management, Landscaping Design or Business Administration. The position requires knowledge of the principles and practices of urban planning, economic development, and development fields and applicable local, state, and federal laws, codes, ordinances, and regulations related to planning and development and enforcement activities.
The employee must be knowledgeable in Village procedures and in the use of standard office equipment, computers, and relevant software programs. The employee will regularly perform data entry and must be skilled in the use of computers.
The employee must have the ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions, work independently with minimal supervision, multitask, and prioritize workload.
The position requires the ability to research and gather information and to communicate that information effectively. Accuracy and attention to detail are required.
Some independent judgment and decision-making skills are required to design and implement programs and/or processes within the department.
This position is typically required to work during the hours Village Hall is open and must regularly attend Village Board or Village Commission meetings and workshops outside of Village operating hours.
A valid driver's license is required.
Schedule/ Work location:
This position is typically required to work during the hours Village Hall is open Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., based on operational needs, for a total of 40 hours per week. This position is exempt under FLSA. Attendance at evening meetings up to several times per month is also required.
Salary:
The starting salary is $63,697- $89,176 DOQ, with excellent fringe benefit package.
