Warner Pacific University is Hiring a Math/Business Tutor and Research Assistant Near Portland, OR

Summary: WPU is a private, Christian, liberal arts college in Portland, Oregon. WPU has been designated a Hispanic Serving Institution by the federal government, with 32% of undergraduates identifying as Hispanic. The institution has been awarded a 5-year Developing Hispanic Serving Institution grant by the Department of Education, through which this position will be funded. This is a benefits eligible position. This position encompasses two sets of duties: the tutoring duties will include providing individual help for students in business, accounting, and general math courses. This individual will coordinate with teaching faculty to remain up to date with current best practices and ensure that academic support is equity-minded. The research assistant duties will include developing systems for qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis to provide ongoing feedback for the grant project's initiatives. They will communicate findings with other project staff and help strategize to increase university enrollment and retention. Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in business, accounting, statistics, mathematics, economics, social/educational research, or a related field
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Patience and adaptability in teaching and explaining complex concepts to varied audiences
  • Two years of relevant experience with related research and analysis activities and projects
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
  • Previous tutoring or teaching experience
  • Experience working with Hispanic, first-generation, and other historically underserved undergraduate populations
  • Experience in the use of statistical applications (i.e., SPSS), research methodologies, and survey research practices
  • Familiarity with institutional research and effectiveness measures (i.e., retention, graduation rates, etc.)
  • Experience with data visualization software
  • Experience with Ellucian’s Colleague, Sharepoint, and SAP Business Objects
Role & Responsibilities: Tutoring:
  • Conduct one-on-one tutoring sessions with students needing assistance in business and mathematics
  • Assess students’ current understanding of the subject matter and tailor sessions to address their specific needs
  • Utilize a variety of teaching materials and resources to enhance the individual learning experience
  • Conduct group study sessions as needed
  • Visit classrooms periodically to offer support and encourage engagement with the tutoring program
  • Participate in professional development in culturally responsive practices
  • Apply evidence-based practices to improve student outcomes
Research Assistant:
  • Assist the Activity Director in developing protocols and training materials for Project Action Research (PAR) teams
  • Develop HSI-specific dashboards and data sets
  • Develop systems to collect and analyze quantitative and qualitative data to evaluate the success of Avanzamos objectives
  • Synthesize inputs from action research and community engagement efforts to improve institutional effectiveness
  • Provide project support to assist the project management team and the HSI Task Force in accessing, analyzing, utilizing, and applying learnings from HSI-specific data
  • Develop and disseminate a survey instrument to assess students’ sense of belonging and satisfaction with advising at WPU
  • Generate and interpret data for increased enrollment and retention
  • Communicate findings to the project team and other stakeholders in a comprehensible manner as appropriate
General:
  • Work with the project team to advance the objectives of the Avanzamos Project
  • Comply with all federal regulations in accordance with the Department of Education
  • Work with Avanzamos team to foster an authentic climate of belonging that validates Hispanic students, recognizing their cultural wealth and channeling it for students’ social mobility
Physical Demands – Work Environment: 
The position is located in a typical office environment. Professional/business casual attire is required.
