Director of Nursing
Position Summary:
The department of nursing services is directed by a qualified nurse administrator. Activities are appropriately integrated with all other departments in the facility that contribute to nursing care. Responsible for taking all reasonable steps to ensure that the optimal achievable quality of care is delivered. Has the administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability for functions and activities of the nursing staff. Interprets and puts into effect administrative policies established by the governing authority. Assists in preparing and administering the budget for the department. Selects and recommends appointments of the nursing staff. Encourages participation in formulating departmental policies and procedures. Promotes initiative and solves problems. Coordinates nursing activities, promoting, and maintaining harmonious relationships among nursing personnel, medical staff, residents, and the public. Recommends the hiring, assignment, transfer, discipline, suspension, discharge, layoff, recall or promotion of nursing personnel or otherwise directs nursing personnel as determined using independent judgment. Serves as a nursing resource for the Personal Care Home Administrator.
Qualifications:
  • Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing. BSN preferred.
  • Currently licensed by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing.
  • Two years of demonstrated ability in nursing practice.
  • Three years of experience in nursing supervision and or administration.
  • Certified in CPR.
Essential Responsibilities:
  • Is responsible for the administration of nursing services in the facility.
  • Ensures a safe and comfortable environment for all residents and staff.
  • Assigns duties and delegates responsibilities to the nursing administration team, and other nursing personnel as necessary, for the smooth operation of the department.
  • Conducts weekly rounds to see residents.
  • In conjunction with the Medical Director, assures that resident care objectives are established and met and that the policies and procedures of the department of nursing services are consistent with the policies and procedures of the long-term care facility, and medical staff.
  • Interprets, implements, and evaluates all long-term care resident care policies and revises them as necessary. Ensures compliance of nursing policies and procedures. Meets with the interdisciplinary team at least monthly to review individual care as a Quality Assurance program.
  • Develops, allocates, and controls the budget for the department of nursing services for long term care including recommendation for the number and type of nursing personnel to be employed and equipment and supplies to be utilized by the nursing staff.
  • Participates in census meetings. Determines appropriate staffing / recruiting and hiring policies based on resident needs.
  • Analyzes and evaluates nursing and related services rendered to improve the quality of resident care and to better utilize staff time and abilities.
  • Serves, chairs, and documents the CQI Committee Meetings.
  • Shares information through the proper channels to insure proper follow-up.
  • Meets regularly with the Medical Director to discuss resident care issues.
  • Represents the department of nursing services in institutional planning and provides the appropriate periodic reports and information on the status of nursing care to the Administrator/Executive Director/Governing Board.
  • Meets with the Administrator to discuss plans, problems, changes, progress, or requests.
  • Interviews and recommends applicants to hire for all long-term care Nursing Staff.
  • Participates in the orientation of new staff members.
  • Develops agenda for monthly Nurse and Nurse Aide meetings in conjunction with the Assistant Director of Nursing and Infection Preventionist.
  • Approves and encourages attendance at outside conferences and workshops to aid in the professional growth and development of staff members.
  • Provide direction to nursing staff through written policies, procedures, nursing administration meetings, routine staff meetings and written memos.
  • Informs the Department of Health, Long Term Care Division, through Nursing Home Facility website of all reportable incidents/accidents as outlined in the State/Federal regulation manual.
  • Submits PB22 when necessary.
  • Participates in and recommends the selection and dismissal of nursing personnel.
  • Participates in State/Federal inspections/surveys and is responsible for implementing policies and procedures to rectify deficiencies in the Nursing Department.
  • Participates in an Antibiotic Stewardship subcommittee that sets standards for antibiotic prescribing practices for all healthcare providers prescribing antibiotics using practice guidelines, local resistance patterns and institution formularies.
  • Coordinates with the Antibiotic Stewardship subcommittee to provide a yearly in-service on Antibiotic Stewardship principles.
  • Oversees adherence to and enforcement of antibiotic prescribing practices.
  • Assures that an annual written evaluation is done on all long-term care nursing staff members.
  • Counsels, supervises, and evaluates performance of supervisory nursing staff as deemed necessary.
  • Writes and updates job descriptions for nursing personnel.
  • Serves as nursing resource for Personal Care Home Administrator.
  • Maintains good interpersonal relationships with residents, nursing personnel, allied professional groups and the public.
Non-Essential Responsibilities:
  • Schedules, directs, and coordinates nursing service activities of professional and auxiliary nursing personnel in rendering resident care.
  • Reviews nursing schedules periodically to assure proper staffing patterns.
  • Participates in orientation program for all new employees.
  • Encourages staff development and professional growth.
  • Attends Administrative Staff and Inservice meetings and other approved relevant seminars/workshops.
  • Participates in community educational health programs.
  • Coordinates nursing staff appreciation days.
  • Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
