Job Title: Manufacturing Maintenance Mechanic

Reports to: Manufacturing Supervisor

Shift: Monday-Thursday 6:00am-4:30pm

Job Summary

The Maintenance Mechanic provides support and maintenance to the facility and the equipment used in the manufacturing process. The Mechanic is tasked with ensuring all equipment remains in top operating condition and is available to meet production needs. The Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing and addressing failures in machinery in accordance with the use of appropriate blueprints, schematic drawings, operator manuals, and manufacturer’s specifications. Mechanics are expected to demonstrate high levels of responsibility and accountability, working effectively and efficiently on assigned tasks and projects.

Essential Duties

  • Learn function and basic operation of machinery and equipment used in manufacturing processes
  • Identify location of all Plant vital controls and reset basic faults as necessary
  • Consult with operators and observe, evaluate, and test operation of machinery and equipment to successfully diagnose faults and verify accuracy of repairs
  • Follow all safety and Lockout/Tagout policies and procedures to ensure all repairs are performed safely
  • Troubleshoot and repair/rebuild machinery, equipment, and systems such as:
    1. Electrical systems including but not limited to fuses, contacts, switches, relays
    2. Electronic systems including but not limited to VFDs, servos, PLCs
    3. Hydraulic systems including but not limited to cylinders, pumps, valves, motors
    4. Mechanical systems including but not limited to bearings, belts, drives
    5. HVAC systems including but not limited to thermostats, heat exchangers, blower motors, evaporator/condenser coils
    6. Machinery and equipment including but not limited to converting machines, printing presses, heat bars, tunnel dryers, ink pumps, air compressors, oxidizers, forklifts,
    7. Facility systems including but not limited to lighting, overhead doors, plumbing, and general repairs
  • Disassemble and reassemble machinery and equipment according to manufacturer’s specifications
  • Examine machine and equipment parts/components during repair and preventative maintenance activities for defects such as excessive wear or breakage and make necessary repairs, replacements, adjustments, and alignments
  • Perform job changes on Pouch and Zipper lines
  • Perform routine quality checks and preventative/seasonal maintenance on facility and manufacturing equipment to ensure proper facility and equipment operation

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate in both the written and spoken language of English to a level that will allow the safe and effective performance of the job
  • Proficiency in basic shop math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions)
  • Proficiency in use of measuring tools such as tape measures, calipers, micrometers, multimeters,
  • Demonstrated knowledge of equipment, parts, systems, and tools utilized in the maintenance and repair of facility and manufacturing equipment (as listed in Essential Duties above)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of basic hand and power tools such as drills, impacts, grinders, drill press, etc.
  • Ability to accurately read and interpret mechanical/electrical/hydraulic drawings and schematics
  • Strong critical thinking, troubleshooting, and analytical skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Commitment to following and promoting safe work habits (compliance with all Safety/AIB policies and procedures)
  • Ability to complete assigned tasks and projects within scheduled timeframes

Education and Experience

  • Minimum of 1 year of industrial or manufacturing maintenance.
  • Previous experience with electrical and electronic principles preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Consistent walking, talking, sitting, standing, climbing, kneeling, crouching, repetitive motions, pulling, pushing, grasping, reaching, stooping, lifting (up to 50 pounds), movements requiring fine motors skills and visual acuity
  • Work is typically performed in conditions typical of a manufacturing environment though certain tasks/projects may occur outside
  • Safety glasses, steel/composite toed shoes, and hearing protection when working on production floor
  • Mechanic is generally protected from weather conditions but not necessarily from high and low temperatures
  • Sufficient noise regularly requires Mechanic to shout in order to be heard above ambient noise level
  • Mechanic will be regularly exposed to a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, stored potential energy, and working at heights of 4 or more feet
  • Mechanic may be exposed to conditions that affect the respiratory system or skin such as fumes, odors, dust mists, gases, limited ventilation, oils, chemicals, cutting fluids, etc.

Travel Requirements

  • This position requires up to 10% travel between location and vendor sites by use of personal motor vehicle
  • Occasional travel to other out-of-state Volm and vendor facilities, may, on rare occasion be requested
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license, be a minimum of 21 years of age, and hold a minimum personal auto liability insurance limit of $300,000 per accident, $300,000 per uninsured/underinsured motorist, and $100,000 personal property
