Job Description

The Hauf Lab at Virginia Tech (www.hauflab.org) is looking for a 1500-hr wage research technician to help with cloning and yeast strain construction for RNA live-cell imaging experiments. This is part of projects that address the role of non-coding elements of mRNA and the molecular basis of "ultra-low" gene expression noise. Techniques will include PCR, cloning, bacteria and yeast transformations, CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome editing of yeast, and fluorescence microscopy.

This position is restricted to 6 - 12 months, and is ideal for someone who seeks additional training and experience in laboratory techniques before moving on to graduate school or an industry position. Some prior experience in a molecular biology lab is required. This is a great opportunity to participate in cutting-edge molecular cell biology research and be an integral member of an enthusiastic team.

Required Qualifications

* Experience in a molecular cell biology laboratory outside of courses.

* Hands-on experience with basic molecular biology techniques in a research or clinical setting.

* Knowledge of proper laboratory procedures.

* Excellent organization and record-keeping skills.

Preferred Qualifications

* B.Sc. degree in biology or a related discipline.

* Experience in designing molecular biology experiments (primer design, cloning strategies).

* Experience with DNA sequence software (SnapGene, Benchling, Lasergene, or equivalent).

* Experience with DNA sequencing and downstream analysis.

* Hands-on experience working with yeast (culture, transformation, growth assays).
