Job Duties

Join the Virginia Office of the Attorney General for a dynamic opportunity in public service. The Virginia Office of the Attorney General is dedicated to serving the residents and state agencies of Virginia by upholding justice, protecting the rights of individuals, and advocating for the interests of the Commonwealth.
This attorney is directly responsible for conducting complex litigation and trials, providing expert legal representation and services to various education agencies under the Secretary of Education with minimal supervision. The professional duties include researching and analyzing facts and law, drafting pleadings, conducting discovery, preparing and arguing motions, conducting settlement negotiations, presenting evidence, and making jury arguments.
This attorney will tackle a diverse array legal matters, potentially including esteemed institutions such as the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SHEV), Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, New College Institute, and the Virginia Department of Education (child care licensing). This Attorney consults with institution or agency staff on the full range of legal issues arising from their administrative activities, including providing advice to the client regarding contracts and negotiating contracts, preparing opinions in response to questions regarding the interpretation of State and federal statutes and regulations affecting Virginia public schools.
Furthermore, you'll have the opportunity to contribute to a broader legal initiatives across the Commonwealth as directed by the Office of the Attorney General.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school
  • Admission to the Virginia State Bar or eligibility for admission by reciprocity
  • Minimum five years’ experience in the general practice of law preferably in a government, public interest, or litigation environment
  • Proficient in legal research, writing, and analytical skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex legal concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage many projects/cases simultaneously and work under pressure
