Position Overview:

Performs all procedures of clinical area, including respiratory care consults, RT procedures, vent management, bedside diagnostics. Assist with out-patient diagnostics as needed. Uses RT protocols and MD orders for therapy procedures and ventilator management.

Essential Functions :

a) Examine and treat patients with breathing or cardiopulmonary disorders per physician order. Treatments include Oxygen therapy, aerosol medications and chest physiotherapy.

b) Monitor and record progress of treatments.

c) Educate patients on respiratory disorders, appropriate use of medications and respiratory plan for discharge home.

d) Draw ABG (arterial blood gas) samples for testing.

e) Application and monitoring of medical gases, humidification systems, ventilator support.

f) Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, airway management and intubation/tracheotomy assistance.

g) Be proficient with (or able to learn) all modes of ventilation used at MMH.

h) Perform necessary procedures with non-invasive methods such as CPAP and BIPAP therapies.

i) Perform diagnostic testing including Pulmonary Function Testing, Electrocardiograms, Electroencephalograms and Home sleep testing. Already competent or willing to learn and become competent in diagnostic areas.

j) Responsible for sharing workload, including 12-hour shifts, various rotating schedules including inpatient hospital floor care and outpatient diagnostics, working extended shifts and taking after hours call to include weekends and holidays if necessary to meet the needs of the department.

Qualifications & Skills:

a) Education: Graduate of AMA-approved school of Respiratory Therapy. Registered Respiratory Therapist by the NBRC. BLS required on hire. ACLS within 6 months of hire

b) Training & Experience: Current, competent and basic knowledge of intensive care and neonatal intensive care including EKG, ABG, spirometry, and oximetry. Team player, compassionate, detail oriented, strong communication skills, patience, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work collaboratively and with minimal supervision.

c) Job Knowledge: Eighty percent of patient care provided per protocols, strong ability to assess patients, identify therapeutic indicators, interpret and integrate diagnostic information, application and assessment of therapy effectiveness, modification or discontinuation per protocols, ventilator management protocols. Comprehensive knowledge of therapy procedures for patients ranging from pediatric to geriatric.
