Job Description

The school nurse is responsible for overseeing and providing health services as necessary for all students. This includes annual routine vision and hearing screens for all children and the management and administration of any in-school medication, for example inhalers or epi-pens. The school nurse is also responsible for overseeing health needs for all students with disabilities, including students with Special Education and 504 plans. Vega has a mild/moderate Special Education program; examples of potential health plans include management for sickle cell anemia, asthma, allergies, or ADD/ADHD. The ideal candidate is a go-getter who is able to find and organize additional health programs and resources for our community, for example organizing dental services, eyeglass vouchers, and vaccine clinics for low-income communities. Bilingual skills are a plus. The weekly hourly requirements of this position can be flexible, as needed by the school. The position has a minimum of 10 hours weekly and a maximum of 40 hours weekly. 

Job Responsibilities

Daily Health Management for Students

  • Manage and oversee any in-school medication administration
  • Manage immunization records for all students
  • Manage and oversee annual vision/hearing screenings for all students

Support Students with Disabilities

  • Participate in 504 and Special Education Evaluation meetings
  • Complete relevant health history of students with disabilities
  • Support creation of individual student health plans, as necessary

Community Collaboration

  • Liaise with medical teams of students with disabilities, as necessary
  • Establish partnerships with community resources to provide health service opportunities in low-income community

Job Qualifications

  • Initiative and strong work ethic. 
  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in nursing from a regionally accredited institution* (*CCNE- and ACEN-accredited programs are also accepted) OR three (3) or more years of licensed, practical experience as an RN with school-aged children
  • A valid RN issued by the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies or an RN in a state that is participating in the nurse licensing compact agreement
  • Successful completion of field experiences and a supervised practicum as prescribed by the preparing institution, including experiences with school-age children in a community health/public health or school setting
  • SSP License with School Nurse Endorsement, or ability to obtain (endorsement requirements here; complete details here)

Salary and Benefits

Vega Collegiate Academy offers a competitive salary and comprehensive health benefits package. The salary range for this role is $48,000-$70,000. 

Start Date

This position will begin in mid July.
