Utah State University is Hiring a Tenure Track or Professional Practice Assistant or Associate Professor of Veterinary Clinical Skills Instruction Near Logan, UT

Overview:

The Department of Veterinary Clinical and Life Sciences (VCLS) in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at Utah State University (USU) is seeking applicants for a fiscal year, tenure track or professional practice Assistant or Associate Professor of Veterinary Clinical Skills Instruction position with the assignment of 70% teaching, 25% research and 5% service (for tenure-track); or 95% teaching and 5% service (for professional practice). The anticipated start date is July 1, 2024. Review of applications will begin January 1, 2024, and continue until position has been filled.

This candidate will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of veterinary professionals by providing them with the practical knowledge and skills to excel in their careers. The candidate is expected to design, develop, and deliver hands-on clinical skills and reasoning courses in the new Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree curriculum; to develop and implement innovative teaching methodologies, assessment tools, and evaluation criteria to measure veterinary students clinical skills proficiency; and to contribute to other curriculum activities associated with their expertise. Courses to be developed include skills such as physical examinations, diagnostic procedures, surgical techniques, and anesthesia management.

Currently, the USU CVM participates in a 2 2 program with the College of Veterinary Medicine at Washington State University and the broader Washington Idaho Montana Utah (WIMU) Regional Program in Veterinary Medicine that provides instruction to 30 students in each class cohort. However, in 2022 the State of Utah approved the establishment of a full 4-year DVM degree program at USU with the goal of admitting its inaugural class of 40 students in the fall of 2025 and supporting a class size of 80 veterinary students in subsequent years. This position offers multiple opportunities for professional development in instruction, curriculum design, and innovative teaching methods. Responsibilities:

Position Responsibilities for Teaching:

  • Design, develop, and deliver hands-on clinical skills and reasoning courses in the DVM degree curriculum
  • Develop and implement innovative teaching methodologies, assessment tools, and evaluation criteria to measure veterinary students clinical skills proficiency
  • Contribute to developing the DVM degree curriculum and other curriculum activities associated with their expertise

  • Contribute to the department, college, university, and profession through service (e.g., serve on graduate student, curriculum, hiring, and admissions committees)

Position Responsibilities for Research (if applicable):

  • Develop and carry out a research program that includes mentoring students to produce quality research as well as seeking external funding to support the research program
  • Publish scholarship in peer-reviewed scientific journals
  • Steady and consistent record of research or creative endeavors supporting your scholarly activity
Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Earned DVM degree or equivalent
  • At least three years of clinical veterinary experience
  • Experience teaching clinical skills to veterinary students
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and as a team member in a collaborative setting.

Additional Qualifications for the Rank of Associate Professor:

  • Demonstrated ability to design and successfully implement clinical skills curricula in a DVM degree program
  • Demonstrated ability to publish refereed scientific/educational research
  • Demonstrated ability to acquire extramural funding (for candidates seeking a research appointment)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Board certification in a relevant veterinary specialty area

Employees typically work indoors and are protected from weather and/or contaminants, however, dependent on assignment, work may be done in agricultural environments (i.e., arenas, barns, paddocks, stocks, etc.) with minimal or no heat and exposure to the elelments.
