Responsibilities

Provide support to the patients and staff of USA Health by performing supervised functions of preparation and delivery of Pharmaceutical services and other duties of a technical nature not requiring professional oversight; abide by and enforce all compliance requirements and policies and performs these responsibilities in an ethical manner consistent with the organization's values; adheres to hospital policies including confidentiality; requires regular and prompt attendance; ability to work the assigned schedule including overtime and call as required; communicates and uses appropriate customer relation skills with manufacturer and supply representatives, coworkers, physicians, and healthcare team in person and via telephone, Teams, or zoom; responds to email, phone calls, texts or chats pertinent to maintaining inventory and ordering supplies; report in department huddle daily any shortages, days supply, alternative plans or dosage forms used; maintains accurate and complete records by utilizing the correct documentation tools and procedures for all pharmacy functions; accepts and completes all duties positively and without conflict; cooperates, helps others and improves the performance of the department; completes all mandatory department, educational and hospital requirements; utilizes cost effective practices in performing all aspects of the job; maintains orderliness and cleanliness of work areas, equipment and supply areas; adheres to current Infection Control and Safety Standards; requires minimal supervision to safely perform essential functions; utilization of proper body mechanics when: Moving equipment/supplies that is necessary to perform essential functions and performing heavy lifting (examples: cases of fluids, coolers of ice and medications); maintain and operate equipment; report broken or malfunctioning equipment; maintain current & adequate medication & supplies; performs patient care activities on the pharmacy computer system in a safe and timely manner; performs all tasks necessary to prepare & deliver medications using a variety of transport mechanisms; restocks all work areas by transfer of stock or filling of appropriate carts/drawers, including emergency stock; assists in training and orientation of technician; to compile and document an accurate and complete list of medications the patient was taking before hospital admission and escalate any discrepancies to pharmacist; perform medication history assessments by interviewing relevant sources including but not limited to patient and/or family interview or phone call to outpatient pharmacy/nursing home/provider’s office; determine time last dose of each medication was taken prior to admission for future scheduling; obtain indication for PRN medications and actual frequency of use of PRN medication; evaluate patient compliance with home medications prior to admission; prompts patient for additional medications, such as over the counter medications, lotions or creams, eye drops, inhalers, etc.; recognize incompleteness of current home medication list and ask clarifying questions; escalate any medication history discrepancies or issues to supervising pharmacist; verify patient allergy information and ensure complete documentation of substance, allergy category, and reaction description; document prior to admission medication histories, compliance, and allergy information appropriately within the electronic health record in a timely manner; communicate to pharmacist about patients with complex/high-risk medications on prior to admission medication list; precept pharmacy technicians, pharmacy students, pharmacists, and nurses regarding home medication interviews and documentation; in addition to these specialized responsibilities, the medication history pharmacy technician will also be able to function as a standard pharmacy technician, assisting pharmacists in preparing and distributing drugs.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent, current registry with the Alabama State Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician, PTCB certified as a Pharmacy Technician, and IV trained. Two years of experience preferred.
