This is responsible technical work performing a variety of tasks assisting with and facilitating the overall workflow in the Histology lab while obtaining preliminary Histotechnologist HTL (ASCP) training; performs and documents equipment preventative maintenance and quality control including stain changed, temperature checks, and chemical disposals; conduct quality control of lab procedures and performs tasks in accordance to established standards; monitors inventory and follows notification protocols for supply orders; restocking new supplies; processing and embedding tissue samples in paraffin wax; sectioning paraffin blocks using a microtome; preparing frozen sections using a cryostat; performing routine histologic, cytochemical, immunohistochemical, and special stains; performs duties related to electron microscopy and immunofluorescence; performs registration and accessioning of specimens; work is performed under the general supervision of a higher level professional position and is reviewed for results obtained; regular and prompt attendance is required; ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required; performs related duties as required.

Associates degree from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama with a combination of 12 semester hours in biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), which may be obtained within or in addition to the associates degree and one year of related experience in a histopathology laboratory or accredited laboratory -OR- successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician program -OR- other combinations of education/experience that meet registry eligible requirements for a Histotechnician with the ASCP. Registry with the ASCP as a Histotechnician is required.
