UPMC Hamot is hiring a Part-Time Nursing Assistant to join our team on 4 MRIU!

This position will require 20-24 hours a week and rotating day/night shifts.

_4 MRIU is a medical/respiratory intermediate and trauma step down unit. The primary focus is caring for a variety of patients with trauma and respiratory complications requiring a higher level of care, but not critical care. The unit services patient populations requiring Bipap, high flow oxygen therapy, CPAP, and Aquanox therapy. The unit also services patients requiring dialysis, mechanical ventilation, and tracheostomy care. Our PCTs/NAs are highly skilled and practice a great deal of autonomy on the unit. They are knowledgeable on skin integrity and are actively invited and recruited to hospital-wide committees._

_Title and salary will be determined based upon education and experience._

**Responsibilities:**

Providing direct patient care as directed by the RN, encompassing activities of daily living such as bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, and ambulating patients.

Maintaining an environment conducive to patient safety and recovery, which involves completing safety checks, ensuring cleanliness and organization of patient rooms and department-specific equipment, changing bed linens, emptying linen hampers, and keeping hallways clear of equipment.

Acquiring and distributing supplies and equipment necessary for patient care delivery, including performing messenger functions, ordering, charging/crediting supplies, setting up patient care equipment within the scope of the nursing assistant position, and stocking patient rooms and unit supply areas. Additionally, the PCT delivers patient nourishments, fills water pitchers, and distributes patient mail.

Performing the UPMC nursing core responsibilities for nursing assistants, including activities of daily living, point-of-care testing (including blood glucose monitoring), weights, vital signs, intake and output measurement, telemetry monitor application/reapplication, prevention of hospital-acquired conditions (HAC) and patient safety indicators (PSI) through interventions like TEDs/SCDs, urine specimen collection, restraint placement and removal, and "ticket to ride" procedures.

Providing diversional activities to reduce or prevent the use of restraints.

Documenting patient care activities in the medical record according to established procedures and completing necessary clerical functions as required by the department.

Complying with safety policies and procedures, including standard precautions and understanding protocols for bloodborne pathogen exposure. Strict adherence to all policies and practices relative to patient care and hospital-related information is emphasized.

Responding within the scope of the nursing assistant role to emergent situations and providing companionship/supervision one-on-one with patients as required.

Demonstrating effective communication skills with all members of the healthcare team, understanding cultural diversity, horizontal violence, and impairment in the health professions, and promoting safety in the workplace.

Developing and maintaining productive working relationships internally and externally by demonstrating accountability, enthusiasm, motivation, and commitment to patients and colleagues.

Suggesting and supporting changes within the department, assuming responsibility for assignments, and addressing challenges proactively.

Ensuring equipment malfunctions are reported to the appropriate department and establishing professional and respectful interpersonal relationships.

Contributing to unit activities such as responding to call lights and telephones, passing meal trays, and transporting patients.

Constructively receiving feedback and direction, identifying and communicating learning needs to the unit director, and taking action to improve knowledge, skills, and performance. Requesting assistance in planning and prioritizing activities as needed and participating in self-review as requested by the unit director.

Performing in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors and undertaking other duties as assigned.

High school diploma or equivalent.

Successful completion of UPMC nursing assistant or EIC training program.

Knowledge of body mechanics and transfer techniques.

Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred.

Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse. **Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:**

Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
