UofL Health - Mary & Elizabeth Hospital is a 298-bed, full-service hospital which has served generations of patients in south Louisville. Originally founded by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in 1874, the hospital offers a full range of vascular, orthopedic, cardiac, neurological, surgical, rehabilitative and 24/7 emergency services including 24/7 STEMI service.
Mary & Elizabeth Hospital is home to UofL Health Weight Loss Care, the regions only weight-loss management program utilizing the Lap-Band System. In addition, the hospital provides the Orbera gastric balloon procedure. The hospital has been recognized as one of the first health care facilities in the nation to receive a Blue Distinction Center for bariatric surgery.
The hospital partnered with sister facility, UofL Health Peace Hospital to open a voluntary inpatient medical detox unit at Mary & Elizabeth Hospital to care for patients with substance use disorders. Most recently, Cancer & Blood Specialists, located adjacent to the Mary & Elizabeth Hospital campus, became the third location of UofL Health Brown Cancer Center. At the center, patients will have continuity of care with trusted oncology and hematology providers, along with access to the multidisciplinary care, pioneering research and clinical trials of the Brown Cancer Center. In addition to the hospital, Mary & Elizabeth has three medical plazas on its campus to provide office space for a wide array of primary care and specialty physicians.

Responsibilities:

Job Summary

The Chest Pain Coordinator is responsible for project management, team building, data utilization, EMS education, and process improvement related to protocol driven care for the STEMI/NSTEMI, acute coronary syndrome, and resuscitation patients per ACC/SCAI, ACC, and AHA guidelines. This position provides support for ACC or other nationally recognized cardiac accreditation, Mission Lifeline/ACTION registry, CARES Registry and associated projects. The Coordinator also acts as liaison to community EMS for implementation of aligned protocol-based care.

  • Stays current on all guidelines from ACC/AHA for care of patients presenting with chest pain and STEMI/NSTEMI and out of hospital cardiac arrest.
  • Stays current on information related to ACS and treatment based on current literature.
  • Assesses performance for key metrics related to STEMI/NSTEMI, Chest Pain, and Resuscitation (Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrest) patients as assigned.
  • Oversees the tracking process for data related to throughput of STEMI patients. At UofL Hospital tracks cardiac patients as well and provides data to the Chest Pain Committee to initiate changes as appropriate and to improve outcomes.
  • Reviews STEMI within 24-72 hours and provides communication feedback to all participants including EMS and referral Emergency Departments. Communication includes opportunity for improvement and recognition of performance excellence to drive best practice.
  • Reviews STEMI with Cath Lab and ED managers, Medical Director, ED physician and Interventionalist within 48-72 to provide mechanism for concurrent improvement.
  • Leads development of policy and care protocols to drive performance excellence.
  • Collaborates with the Department of Quality to use data registry information from participating registries. UofL using the Chest PainMI registry and Chest Pain to develop, educate, and will oversee/implement improvement processes
  • Coordinates and provides education to staff, physicians, EMS, and other community partners to drive best practice for rapid access to PCI based STEMI care. Works with Nursing for annual required education for accrediting body.
  • Co-Chairs the Cardiology Committee meeting or the Chest Pain Committee and assumes lead for elements directly related to ACS/STEMI/NSTEMI. At UofL chairs the Resuscitation Committee and assumes lead for elements directly related to Chest Pain and resuscitation patients in addition to Chest Pain Committee
  • Observes, reviews, and trouble shoots processes for STEMI team activation. If possible, responds to STEMI alert during regular work hours.
  • Acts as key hospital contact for EMS services and air transport relative to STEMI as appropriate for the facility.
  • Collaborates with Nursing for education and improvement activities related to inpatient STEMI care.
  • Represents hospital to any regional registry committees, ex: AHA regional STEMI care committee and reports back to Nursing/Radiology Director and Medical Director.
  • Meets with regional EMS and referring ED leadership. Relays STEMI activation process, troubleshoots problems in access, and provides general support for regionalization of STEMI care. Represents the hospital at local, regional and national level related to best practices for ACS patients. Speaking at educational conferences may be required.
  • Work in a collegial manner with the Chest Pain Medical Director, Cardiac Cath Lab Medical Director and/or Cardiology Medical Director to assure continuity in care of all cardiac patients and quality outcomes.
  • Assists in the development of strategic plans for growth of Cardiology Services Acts as a resource internally and in the community regarding educating others about ACS and Hands Only CPR
  • Maintains compliance with all company policies, procedures and standards of conduct
  • Complies with HIPAA privacy and security requirements to maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelors degree in health care related field (required)
  • Masters degree (preferred)

Experience:

  • Two years experience in a cardiac program environment. Experience that is commensurate with the practice setting and programmatic needs of the cardiac patient population. (required)
  • Previous experience as a STEMI and/or chest pain coordinator (preferred)

Licensure:

  • RN preferred

Certification:

  • BLS (required)
  • ACLS (preferred)
