Minimum Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications
Graduate degree in the humanities, social sciences or related discipline.
Two years of experience in publishing (combination of employment, internship, assistantship, and/or apprenticeship).
Position Summary
The Acquisitions Editor is responsible to the Editor-in-Chief of the University of Georgia Press for managing and growing the Press's distinguished and financially successful publication lists in diverse, interdisciplinary literary studies, American studies, and creative works. This includes books published in the following competitions and series: The New Southern Studies, Animal Voices/Animal Worlds, The Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction , Crux: The Georgia Series in Literary Nonfiction , and the Georgia Poetry Prize . The Acquisitions Editor acts independently, utilizing excellent judgment and entrepreneurial instincts, while maintaining discretion and a professional demeanor.

Contracts, presents to the Press board, and transmits 20-25 high-quality, marketable new book projects per year. Meets financial and content goals established for list. Manages assigned series and competitions. Maintains updated project records; communicates project statuses; and moves projects along pipeline toward transmittal. Solicits and evaluates reports from suitable external readers. Prepares projects for presentation to the internal Early Decision committee and the Press's faculty Editorial Board. Engages with editorial board in relationship building on behalf of the Press. Builds global network of scholars and other potential authors, editors, readers, agents, and supporters.

Works closely with editorial assistants and student interns who provide administrative support to the acquisitions department. Represents Press throughout university to publicize internship program.

Secures funding for book projects through applying for subventions, grants, and Open Access programs. Engages with Press Advisory Council; potential donors; granting agencies and nonprofits; Development staff; and the Director in advancing the mission of the Press through relationship building and profile-raising activities within the state and region.
