Job Description: SUMMARY This is advanced and specialized professional accounting work. Performance of lower level duties may be required. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Prepares varied financial reports including monthly financial statements, tax reports and budget information. Prepares financial reports for various organizations including local, state and federal agencies. May maintain general ledger. Controls financial transaction input to the accounting and information system. Provides continual account analysis to ensure accuracy of the accounting methods used and to support management decision making. Establishes and maintains job costs files, ensuring requests are appropriate from a budgetary standpoint. Assists in preparing cost allocations and cost studies. Prepares various account schedules as required for year-end activity. Monitors accounting related provisions of contracts and inventory procedures and controls. Oversees maintenance of revenue and appropriation records. Assists internal and external auditors during audits of assigned responsibility areas. Attends work on a continuous and regular basis. NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Advises on accounting related industry policies and procedures affecting the City’s operation. Evaluates investment and debt service activity of the system and prepares related monthly journal entries. Performs other related duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job function satisfactorily. Below are the required education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, economics or other related disciplines; and two (2) years of experience in accounting, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities. CERTIFICATIONS OR LICENSES Licenses None. Certifications None. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Thorough knowledge of accounting principles, practices and procedures and ability to apply such knowledge. Thorough knowledge of office machines and computerized accounting systems. Knowledge of auditing methods. Familiarity with fund accounting. Knowledge of legal requirements pertaining to Municipal government accounting desirable. Ability to prepare complex financial reports and statements. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to work effectively with co-workers and the general public. PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess certain physical abilities and be able to withstand work related environmental conditions. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS While performing the duties of this job, the employee is often required to sit for prolonged periods of time.
