The Hawaii Keiki School Nurse will support the HI Dept. of Education Complex Areas to provide school-based health services, which includes screening for treatable health conditions, providing referral to primary health care and patient-centered medical home services, preventing and controlling communicable disease and other health problems, and providing emergency care for illness and injury.
Our program is expanding and we are seeking a Registered Nurse with effective coordination and interpersonal skills, and the ability to interpret and provide guidance to individual schools. Must be a team player with effective verbal and written communication skills.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS

Assessment

  • Assess the health needs of the assigned school and/or Complex Area schools as requested.
  • Assess students for COVID-19 symptoms following current protocols.
  • Assess the student’s medical and health needs.
  • Assess the care management needs of exposed or infected students
  • Identify students who would benefit from a telehealth visit with HK APRN.
  • Identify health-related barriers to student academic improvement.
  • Assess the skill level, competency, and learning needs of the SHA.
  • Assess the effects of medication on the student’s health status and impact on educational program.

Planning

  • Collaborate on annual Complex Area SHA Back to School and quarterly meetings.
  • Identify students’ health problems and plan to address actual and potential health problems.
  • Identify staff and children at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19.
  • Plan health education activities based on an assessment of the health needs of the local school community/complex including promoting behaviors that reduce potential COVID-19 spread.
  • Coordinate with parents and/or legal guardians when necessary for the development and management of the plans for the safety and continuity of care for students with COVID-19 and chronic medical conditions.
  • Plan and collaborate to obtain consent for telehealth services and schedule a telehealth visit when necessary.
  • Coordinate with DOH PHNs to assure immunization compliance of students.
  • Plan and coordinate with the DOH PHNs and school personnel to support the Stop Flu at School clinics.
  • Coordinate with the DOH contract tracing efforts in a school setting.
  • Assist school personnel with planning and follow up after COVID cases/outbreaks are identified in the school setting.
  • Organize and implement screening programs and refer students as appropriate.

Intervention

  • Provide consultation on the health needs of students when requested, including students with complex health needs, to assigned school and schools in the complex area.
  • Support well-child interventions using evidence-based practice guidelines.
  • Share and interpret information, in compliance with HIPAA & FERPA regulations, with school personnel regarding the health problems of students.
  • Assist school personnel with implementing protocols for assessment of students with symptoms of COVID-19.
  • Assist school personnel with return to school policies and procedures for students and staff excluded for presumed.
  • Delegate nursing care tasks, functions, and activities to Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP) in accordance with the regulations of the Hawaii Nurse Practice Act.
  • Conduct home visits with school personnel as indicated or requested.
  • Collaborate with school and community agencies to provide COVID-19 educational, social and health services to the school population.
  • Refer students, their families, and faculty to community resources to meet identified needs.
  • Provide HIPAA/FERPA compliant information to authorized parties regarding the health of individual students in order to ensure appropriate delivery of services.
  • Provide clinical guidance to assigned complex area school SHAs regarding health room functions.
  • Use evidence-based practice to guide nursing care.

Evaluation

  • Evaluate students’ responses to intervention and revise the plan of care as needed.
  • Evaluate school’s current plans for COVID and recommend changes/improvements when necessary.
  • Use data to inform health improvement strategies.
  • Prepare program reports as required.
  • Participate in program evaluation.
  • Contribute to the development of COVID-19 health-related policies, goals, and objectives for the Complex Area.
  • Coordinate with designated DOE staff in the interview and selection process for the SHA as requested.
  • Provide input regarding SHA performance of clinical duties to principals for DOE performance appraisals as requested.
  • Provide supervision for HK School Health Support Staff within the complex.

Interprofessional/Interagency Collaboration

  • Collaborate with Complex Area APRN or RN.
  • Facilitate telehealth visits with the Complex Area APRN, the APRN Telehealth Nurse Lead, and other community providers when necessary.
  • Work with school personnel in promoting a physical and psychological environment conducive to the health, safety, and well-being of students and staff.
  • Serve as liaison for agencies and programs offering field experiences for students in health sciences professions on a voluntary basis.
  • Serve as one of the Complex Area liaisons to the Department of Health (DOH).
  • Participate in multidisciplinary teams and committees.

Other

  • Adhere to the National Association of School Nurses Scope and Standards of Practice.
  • Conduct telephone triage on the HK Hotline.
  • Comply with all legal, program, and employer requirements and policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Education/Training & Experience
  • Possession of a current unrestricted license to practice as a registered nurse (RN) in the State of Hawaii; or ability to sit for NCLEX exam within 180 days of graduation, in accordance with Executive Order 20-04
  • or LPN licensure
  • BLS for healthcare provider certification.
  • Experience with the use of electronic health records and program reporting
  • One year of experience in community-based health settings, school nursing, or pediatric nursing; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  • Ability to complete N95 Fit Testing upon hire.
