A Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (Ultrasound Tech) is a Diagnostic Ultrasound Professional who provides diagnostic patient care services using ultrasound and related diagnostic procedures. The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is responsible for the independent operation of sonographic equipment, and for performing and communicating results of diagnostic examinations using sonography. The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is also responsible for patient schedule, equipment maintenance, the report of equipment failures, and quality assessment (QA). The Sonographer always maintains a high standard of medical ethics and is self-motivated to increase level of understanding and knowledge of the field, disease, and new procedures as they evolve.

Locations & Schedule: 

Monday - Wednesday, 7:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. at 4700 Forest Dr. Columbia, SC 29206

Thursdays, 7:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. at 325 Broad St. Sumter, SC 29150

Primary Responsibilities:

Will perform the following duties and responsibilities, which may include, but are not limited to:

  • Always ask for at least two forms of identification, (name, DOB)
  • Instructing the patients to undergo the appropriate positions to get accurate images
  • Keeping equipment in quality working order
  • Obtaining images for any areas requested by the Radiologist
  • Keeping track of patient records
  • Assisting Cardiologist and physicians in the process of understanding and evaluating images
  • Patient communication and preparation including removal of garments or jewelry that may interfere with procedure and explaining how the process works
  • Positioning patients properly to obtain echo and vascular scans
  • Setting the equipment to obtain the best density, detail, and contrast of the area being imaged
  • Applying their knowledge of anatomy and physiology to the process to help the physician diagnose problems
  • Must be able to communicate calmly, compassionately, and professionally with all different types of patients including the elderly, ailing, and handicapped
  • Apply HIPPA to every patient
  • Putting reports in the patient chart after the Radiologist has read the images, and the report is dictated
  • Maintains a daily log of patients seen 
  • Check each patient’s order before scanning the patient, if there are any questions with the order, make sure to ask the ordering physician

Required Qualifications: 

  • Satisfactory completion of formal Radiologic technology training in an AMA-approved school and ability to meet requirements for registry by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) and/or Graduate of a formal Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program or Cardiovascular Technology Program
  • Registered with ARDMS, ARRT, or SPI

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • 1 years of Ultrasound Sonographer experience preferred or new graduates could be considered for this position depending on number of clinical hours
