Dean of Students

Summary

The Dean of Students serves as a member of the school’s administrative team and assists with the daily operation of the school, specifically in the areas of behavioral, student conduct and disciplinary prevention. The incumbent also provides leadership and serves as a resource for Restorative Practices and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS).

11-month in person position

Education, Experience and/or Certification License Requirement

  • College graduate; Bachelor’s degree required
  • 5 years classroom instructional experience, preferred
  • School Leadership Certification, preferred
  • Previous teaching experience in a public or private school, preferably in an urban setting; or experience working with groups of children and youth, preferably in an urban setting; within the candidate’s special skill area preferred;

Competencies

  • Oversees and supports the de-escalation of students in crisis and physical altercations; then oversees and ensures follow up and communication to all parties involved and their families
  • Assigns and maintains two-way radios
  • Regularly communicates with families about positive and negative behaviors and/or incidents exhibited in school
  • Provides follow up and restoration after incidents with students and families, sometimes involving home visits
  • Conducts home visits with other support staff members to look out for students’ wellbeing and safety and/or to communicate with families that are unreachable
  • Enforces student uniform policy
  • Available to answer support calls for Tier 3 behaviors
  • Follow up on written discipline referrals within 24 hours and maintain the log of this in School Runner
  • Assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of intervention programs that address the needs of at-risk students in regards to behavior;
  • Develops and administers disciplinary procedures in accordance with Charter policies and state laws; receives referrals and confers with students, parents, teachers, community agencies, building administration and law enforcement; responds to and resolves parent, student, and staff concerns and complaints; serves on discipline or expulsion panels as assigned;
  • Provides direction to a variety of faculty, staff and student programs and services; participates in informal classroom visitations and observations in regards to student behavior and classroom management; coaches teachers in the area of behavior management and provides recommendations and suggestions for improvement.
  • Liaises with the Center for Youth with regard to the Alternative to Suspension (ATS) program.
  • Supports in the supervision of cafeteria monitors, Behavioral Interventionist, and Center for Youth’s Social Emotional Specialist
  • Participates as needed in Individual Educational Plan meetings and RTI teams.
  • Monitors Schools Bark Account/ Internet Security
  • Attends meetings of parents and other groups
  • Schedules and leads reentry meetings for students after suspensions
  • Works with the building principal and assistant principal to establish a safe and secure learning environment for students. Assists with the development of plans for emergency situations in collaboration with other administrators, staff and public safety agencies, including maintaining the SAVE document, being compliant with fire drills and all other evacuation drills
  • Facilitates professional development for staff on restorative practices, trauma-informed practices, and other strategies used with students
  • Oversees bus incidents and reviews bus suspensions
  • Be a support in scheduling building security for events
  • Prepares and maintains a variety of school, county, state and federal records and reports (i.e., DASA reports, suspension reports to state); directs preparation of records and reports by staff (i.e. discipline referrals)
  • Participates in administrative meetings and training to improve administrative skills; maintains current knowledge of the district’s adopted social emotional curriculum and management systems like Whole Brain Teaching and Classroom Economy (6th grade)
  • Performs other duties as assigned that directly support students, families, and staff.
  • Models the school’s values and the standard for academic and personal excellence.
  • Support teachers in empowering students to meet their full academic and personal potential.
  • Serves as the school DASA Coordinator

Responsibilities are representative but may not capture all tasks to be performed. The candidates will be expected to complete all duties which may be required in the performance and scope of their position.

Physical Environment

May require physical work including moving about to coordinate work, moderate exposure to loud noises, and possibly lifting of heavy objects.
